Mad_Radhu: Next thing you know, they'll have to dress up like it's Walmart.

"I wish they wouldn't have done that because most of their shoppers are people who are not getting paid a lot of money," said Leniza Costa, a beauty influencer in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, who is "known for always going" to Dollar Tree.
Costa won't shop at Dollar Tree (DLTR) as often and instead will look to purchase $1 items at Walmart

This theoretically would raise revenues by 25% but will probably just cause people to come by less and buy fewer impulse items, and everything at the dollar tree is impulse items.

I mean it sucks and all for those that rely on these stores for the majority of their shopping, but what are they going to do? Prices are going up on everything in every store...it's actually amazing that Dollar Tree has stuck to the $1 pricepoint for as long as they did.

2022-01-16 10:11:13 PM
Used to be that all stores with "Dollar" in their name sold most things for a dollar, they gave that up years ago. Dollar Tree was the last holdout on that front, and I'm honestly surprised they lasted this long.

Yeah I shop at Walmart often and there's very few items priced that low.

All they have to do is put a $2 price on everything for like a few days out of the year, then the rest of the time:
WAS $2.00, NOW ONLY $1.25!

The content monster is hungry, Mr. Church.  It must be fed.  I think some of those articles were just part of a news process, from speculation to reality.

If relative repeats show up again over time, it gives you the chance to make more funnies.  Are you a funny guy?

I would have thought someone would be posting blaring headlines of 25% inflation!  But I guess people have trouble doing the math.

You know what someone ought to do? I am not even joking.

Put up a gas station-like sign on which one can change the numbers. You know, 1.39 or 1.49  or 0.99. And then just move the prices around. People will watch the signs and when they get low, they will come in droves and you can clear out the inventory. And if you have shortages for COVID19 or whatever, you just adjust your prices upward. Or send them really low during commutes, or when you have a lot of employees ready to handle everyone.

Or, you know if you have a remote location, you have to charge a little more. Stands to reason. So you plunk one just off the highway and put 2.19 on the sign.

Why not?

Great gimmick. Anyone who uses this idea owes 12 people TotalFark.

And automatically done so, instead of relying on congress to get their shiat together.

I've advocated for years that MW and tax brackets in particular should be tied together and autoadjusted annually by the CPI or another good measure of inflation, but furthermore that the federal budget should auto-renew at its previous values + the same inflation multiplier *unless* congress passes a new one.

That would fix the "holding the budget hostage leads to government shutdown" bullshiat we get almost annually now. If you can't get enough votes in house and senate to change it, you're stuck with last year's.

as many foodtab Farkers likely know, I am an absolute Dollar Tree prinzess. I farking love the place.

and yet, haven't been for literally months, mainly because ig'nant plaguerat jackwagons. plus, I really ain't need all those delicious junk-foods. esp. that magnificent selection of Herr's chip flavors.

I think their only items I mostly rely on are such as: frozen cauliflower rice, frozen broccoli cauliflower mix, frozen "stir fry" mix, frozen red pepper + onion, frozen mixed berries, frozen skin-on salmon filet (really not as scary as you'd think!) and frozen Golden Krust patties. I mean, sometimes they have actual quality pickles, and the wife loves their on-brand greeting cards, and occasionally they have decent cat treats.

or, yeah, guilty-admission - sometimes we used to buy those boxed scalloped potatoes / gratin, or off-brand stovetop stuffing. probably for the best to have stopped those things, I hesitate to even glance at the nutrition label.

what else... hmm, even at $1.25, the flatpack tuna and salmon are still appealing. also their 100%-whole-wheat bread may still be worth it at the new price.

A certain household cleaning product was 32 oz. for $1, now 20 oz. for $1.25.  From 3.125 cents per ounce to 6.25 cents per ounce.  Talk about inflation.  I wonder if the White House economic advisors and policy makers are aware.

I stopped going to the one down the street from me a few months ago because it was always trashed (even if you went in right after it opened), never stocked and only one person running a register.
I'm a poor, but I also don't have the patience to stand in line after work behind 4 people with full carts when I only have some greeting cards & yellow rice. Now I just don't buy certain things anymore.

If they had made improvements in their offerings at the same time the prices shot up, they might have avoided a lot of the blowback. But no, it's all the same stuff, same sizes, 25% pricier overnight.

If you are losing money on each item, selling more doesn't help.

I would also be cautious about putting much value in the 2021 financial statements as a guide.for the current situation. Their margins were a lot better than I expected, but it still wouldn't take that much to have a big impact, for example their profit margins in Q3 2022 were about 2/3 of the prior year.

I will be interested in seeing their Q4 numbers when they are available.
