(The Gamer)   Bad endings in video games are often good things. Subby is choosing Arizona's food supply over Colorado's freedom in Wasteland 3, not giving a fark if Garrus survived Mass Effect 2, and pissed Captain Titus got arrested for witchcraft in Space Marine   (thegamer.com) divider line

Most of the bad endings are just short "you lose."
I'm sure you could mine tvtropes for all the decent "non golden endings" though

There's a Wasteland 3??

I never finished Wasteland 2. Better think about reinstalling it.

I did like Wasteland 3 hiding a choice of realpolitik vs. good morals amongst its bizarre farking Colorado. At first you're like "sure, let's bring freedom over working with this old ornery ass of a warlord" and then you look at the long view and ... you should've stuck to the original mission and worked with the various devils.

I don't think I saw any Far Cry games listed, strangely.

Fallout Tactics, the underrated Fallout game, had no good endings. Enlightened choices made it worse.
"Oh, you stopped man-killing robots and made a rainbow coalition of mutants, tech cultists and beastmaster tribals working together to bring a better society with the Brotherhood of Steel? That's nice. But your Brotherhood of Steel expeditionary force were always militant authoritarians at heart and radicals to boot, and exploiting all this would have them become a power far worse for Colorado and the Midwest."

/Fallout New Vegas hinted Tactics' ending might be canon, with Ulysees muttering about "the horrors of Denver."

Wasteland 2 was good, but too long and clumsy with its skills. It took advantage of my nostalgia for the '80s original. I tried to replay it and ... nope, just felt like I was wasting my time.

Not the case with Wasteland 3. Wasteland 3 is just right length-wise, and a lot more polished at the skills tree. Not to mention, the story is better and has a bizarre soundtrack that sneaks onto the Civilization tier, fitting the ridiculous nature of its post-nuke Colorado. Never thought Wang Chung's Everybody Have Fun Tonight would sound good as a somber cowboy ballad during a gory shootout, or a psychedelic country/gospel America the Beautiful could work.

Currently playing through Disco Elysium for the first time. I did enjoy the sudden "you had a heart attack and died" from kicking a trash can 10 minutes into the game.

Titus had an amazing story planned out over 2 more games before THQ went under. Space Marine 2 was going to be Titus in Deathwatch. Space Marine 3 was going to be Titus as Chapter Master of an Ultramarines Successor Chapter.

Or an "old time religion" song like Blood of the Lamb, one that by all rights I should hate, being turned into a phenomenal dark Blues Saraceno-esque number during the prologue's climax, with your gunfire acting as the perfect punctuation to it.  The part of me that loves old-school crunchy stat-heavy RPGs still kind of likes 2 better, and there were a lot of parts that made 3's tone a bit weirder/sillier than I personally preferred, but I'll definitely admit that a lot of the things 3 streamlined were in definite need of streamlining.

Missing is not encouraging Ciri at certain points and she portals off into the White Frost never to be heard from again.

2022-01-16 8:12:39 PM
My first playthrough of Wasteland 3 I think I picked the worst possible ending. I basically said "fark off" to all of Colorado, sent the food to Arizona and left for more adventures. Epilogue was all "everything went to shiat because you left."

2022-01-16 8:14:01 PM
Inti Creates has this shiat down to a science. Pretty much all of their games have horrible bad ends if you don't meet certain conditions (usually just collecting stuff, typically nothing too impossible.) In the Blaster Master Zero trilogy alone your co-pilot self-destructs, is implied to be murdered, or is presumed lost and a cosmic danger to all of Normal Space if you don't get shiat done properly in each game.

Space Marine might have gotten me to cuss out Leandros for his dick actions (to a Warhammer 40K fan familiar with its bleakness, it was Tuesday), but this is still the greatest "SERIOUSLY? F--K YOU" moment in a gamedom's endings.

Anyways, I've tried it, there isn't a clean way to kill only Jacob and get the best endings in 3.

My Garrus whined about never being taken on adventures with my renegade sentinel femshep. I could do tech stuff, paired better with biotic teammates and fell in love with Thane, who could snipe. No use for the Turian.

But the ultimate kicker was watching Liara lose her shiat and having her dreams and presumptions of the Protheans shattered when listening to Prothean Javik in ME3. Imagine, digging up a time capsule from the 20th Century, knowing only the music, the arts, movies, sports, pop culture and science achievements of that time, and inside is ... a farking living Nazi officer -- was gleefully dark comedy gold. Pairing those two early in ME3's re-release for their bickering and disgust of each other in missions was entertainment. Garrus' sass didn't match the schadenfreude.

In short, Garrus was not missed, I found him to be overrated and unlike Wrex (a very useful bullet sponge and ass-kicker) or Jacob (he pairs well with sentinels' combos, btw), he doesn't stop you from getting the best ending if you have him die.

/even beat Garrus in the shooting contest in a second playthrough

WL3 was wonderful. I backed WL2 when they first announced it. It shows the difference a budget makes. WL2 was largely funded by gamers, WL3 was funded by commercial sales of WL2. I've been thinking about another WL3 playthrough. It's been 2 years or so.

Any one play ogre battle back in the day?

Mass effect 3 blah

Fallout 3 blah

Red dead, hated building going through it all and dead

I wished the diablos had better endings

Walking dead one, dude turning to a zombie sucked but can't say it was a bad ending it fit.

Some Nintendo endings were a little lame but it was Nintendo, final fantasy comes to mind

You want a 'bad ending'? Nuke Megaton in FO3, then go back to it. Moira is a Ghoul.

That shook me pretty hard on my 'evil' playthrough.

Honestly though, Titus jumped off of a mile high tower and spent the entire fall punching a daemon prince in the face. Being made to rejoing the ultrasmurfs after that moment of awesome would have been the real punishment.

Also Leandros was right. While people keep claiming that the Codex Astartes is really only recommendations, that completely ignores how the first thing that Robot Gorillaman does when he wakes up after 9,000 years is introduce a bunch of new types of Space Marines whose loadout and deployment are even more restricted than the old Codex Astartes squad system.

/They were only ever recommendations.

it actually looks like that might be a plot point in the recently announced Space Marine 2, Titus appears to have had a demotion during his update to Primaris spec.

Yeah, but 3 is explicitly a splinter group that's diverged from the Brotherhood's original mission since coming east.  The Brotherhood was all about hoarding tech, not using it to help people.  There's a reason that your introduction to them in the first game involves them sending you to your death for discovering one of their bunkers.
