I usually leave a 15 to 20 percent tip. I know they work hard and can't live off the wages.

What I don't like is tip jars in stores. The employer should pay them enough to work there. I'm not tipping someone for being a cashier/stocker.

There is a liquor store nearby that has a tip jar for the owner. Oh, hell no. I will not shop there.

I take the first digit, double it, and then round the tip up so the bill is an even dollar amount.  You'd be amazed how this impresses servers.  Just for rounding up that 87 cents or whatever, you're suddenly a f*cking philanthropist.

I feel the same way about petsmart. They always ask if I want to donate money to help homeless pets. And I hate that guilt crap. Like if I say no, I hate animals and want them all to be euthanized. Despite the fact I'm in line buying food, treats, and toys for my dog and cats and clearly love animals.

After living for several years in Europe, it became clear to me that tipping is just a mechanism to prop up a failed business model. Sleazy American businessmen cooked up the scheme as a method to underpay their labor and put tip guilt on the consumer.

/ If a business can't run without tips, maybe it's best for the invisible hand to pimp slap it...

I've done that. Then they're all like, "okay then" in a dejected voice.

I did snippy once and shot back, "No! I've already got 5 alley cats I saved!" Then I felt bad because I was rude.

I'll take your advice though and say next time. Because it's just a huge tax scam anyways for the company.

That's a red flag right there. Maybe they're just too cheap to have a printer or maybe they like to scam customers with extra charges and no one notices because they don't get an itemized receipt.

I had a bar/club pull that crap on me once. I had a tab open for myself and my friends all night. They had a computerized system. While they had no trouble giving me the total, they couldn't provide me with an itemized receipt. Hinky.

/As for the tip, if you make a mistake with the credit card machine, just say you made a mistake and need to do the transaction again. Don't make a farking scene, especially if you're planning to be a cheapskate.

Imagine your next paycheck is half of what it usually is, because your boss decided he didn't like what you were wearing, or you're too fat or ugly, or he thought you just weren't friendly enough to him. Or because he just didn't feel like paying you.

I tip my grocery delivery drivers, because I know they are getting screwed by their bosses (and considering my usual minimum tip is about $20 for an hours worth of work, they have said they do appreciate the tip).

I tip only based on the service I get. The food can suck but I'll still tip well for fair to excellent service.

I will not tip well for poor service.

I think tipping should be done everywhere.  Someone holds a door open for you?  Give them a couple of bucks.  Someone lets you merge on the highway?  Chase them down to the nearest gas station and pay for their fill up.

People not reading much and dialect differences in various areas mean that some people have never seen or heard the word.  ISTR someone (a Farker?) talking about the time their boss took a large work team to dinner, then saw the bill and said, "Who ordered the gratuity?  It's the most expensive thing on here!"

My point is that you would never accept that your paycheck could vary widely based on the mood and biases of your boss, but this is what servers deal with every day.

Probably safe to add this one to the list of things that never happened.

Let's do some math:

True story... me and my wife went out for supper last night. We go early to beat crowds.

Our order for the 2 of us was around $45.00. I tipped $7.

In the 1/2 hour we were there our waitress had maybe 5 other tables. Like I said, it was early and a slower period. So let's say she made $7, (which is low because it was only two of us) in 30 minutes off each table. She's making $70 an hour in tips. I know that's a low ball estimate where I was. And it's not even a high end place. Do you think she wants to switch to an hour based pay at $25 or $30 an hour?

A good waitstaff job is awesome pay. I speak from experience.

Supposed to. With electronic tipping it's hard to not but cash is king. I try to make sure I have cash for the tip whenever I go out.

15% is just 10% plus half of that.

So let's start with this:  If it costs a restaurant $70/hour to keep a high functioning wait-person on the pay roll, cool, that's the proper wage to expect.  When we think hourly jobs yah we're probably thinking sub 50$/hour range right, but that's not always the case.  The other thing to remember is this wait person isn't working 7.6 hours/day, they're probably there once or maybe twice a day for 2-3 hour bursts right, so the cost/hour to employ them should reflect that too.

Basically:  You said 25-30/hour, not me.

Tipping on *rent*? Fark that bullshiat!!! The landlord has already probably set the rent to cover all their costs, to include the hourly wages they pay to the administration and maintenance minions they have (if they have such minions), and they do *not* need a tip.

But that's not how it works in most restaurants. Your server is most likely sharing tips with the host, other servers, and kitchen staff. So she's not making $70/hr in tips, she's making $35, which she's supposed to declare and pay taxes on (I know, I know).

One if one of my employees was shiatting on customers while still in uniform not sure I would want them.

Two recently these seem to be fake to garner sympathy and in her case probably more followers

Three finally I hate a sense of deserving tips, tips should be subjective terrible service bad tips and if there are situations of great service and terrible or no tip sadly that's the gamble, plenty of jobs that don't depend on tipping, I have done both always hated the complainers but most of the time there were reasons they didn't get tipped as well
