Well if moved out of his command center in his mom's basement they would have been fine.

Did you know that in addition to suing his mother over a couple of baseball cards, Chris Trencher is also a top backgammon player?

If the cards are in "gem mint" condition, they can be worth $30,000, said Chris Ivy, director of sports for Heritage Auctions.

Of nearly 3,300 Topps Satchel Paige cards from 1953 graded for auction, only eight have been found to have that level of quality, he noted.

According to PSA's population report (he's #220), they've graded eight PSA 9 Paiges and zero gem mint ones. Huge difference. And the bottom corner is notoriously touchy in that set. I sent in a gorgeous Luke Easter with the tiniest speck in the corner and it came back a NM+ 7.5.

And by the sound of it, the Paige and Kiner have been kept in screw-down holders. A PR specialist for PSA  blogged on their site that they can deem a card "altered" and "ineligible for grading".

Not only is there's no chance those two cards are worth $25,000, but he's most likely off by at least a factor of 10.

How does one become a top backgammon player?  Is this something you can support yourself by doing?

The idea of "gem mint" is still a new one and has only been really implemented when the card grading frenzy started ten years ago.  Through it, cards that normally would go for tens of dollars would skyrocket in 600% in value.  Granted, it means encasing the card in lucite and let it stay in stasis like a cardboard Han Solo.

I still think suing for damages would be petty, but considering how serious sports cards have gotten as investments this past year, I should not be surprised.  I am just disappointed.

Backgammon player.

Plays a game of chance that requires some thinking, but at a level he can win at because there are fewer players each year.

But too scared to give chess a go. Because the opportunity to make money at his level  because the talent pool gets restocked.

So a smart move to make a steady income, but his weakness is that he shows he must rely on luck over skill.

I gotta say though, in typical NYP fashion, TFA was clearly more than a little bit biased.

I to a degree have issues with the grading of collectibles, Not so much for the grading it's self but for the fact people use it to create an artificial scarcity and use that as an excuse to pump up the asking price.
