That stuff sucks. It's almost the consistency of Lucky Charms marshmallows. But harder, and worse.

Wait a few years if you can. The place is half-closed anyway for extensive renovations and updates.

In fact, they're already scheduled to be closed for most of this year anyway.

I agree but imo the Udvar-Hazy Center is better.

OK.  If the air and space museum is closed, time for a full on hard core military enforced martial law lockdown for the whole nation.  About 6 months of actual lockdown should do it.

The last time I went was in like 1990. I'm due to go back the next time I visit DC.

At the moment not as much.  Some of the older galleries are under a multi-year overhaul.

In December I got to go a Jingle on the Runway, a 10k on the Dulles runway, that started and finished at the Udvair Hazy hangar. It was awesome.

Fair warning: the "renovations and updates" typically seen in the Smithsonian (especially the National Museum of History and Technology) consists of ripping out exhibit space and adding gift shops and open space.

/quite grumpy about that, and a lifelong fan of the Smithsonian (I could likely do a guided tour over the phone for any pre-renovated parts of any of the museums)

Other than the $15 parking fee. It's free after 4PM (closes @ 5:30), and they used to have a free drop-off/pickup lane, but the last time I went, you had to pay $15 up front, then come back to the guard shack, go inside and present your parking stub to begrudgingly hand you your money back, and having to do the same routine when picking up.

The first time I went, in the 1970's, they had a moon rock mounted on a display case, guarded by armed guards, that you could line up to actually touch. As a kid, I thought that was awesome, touching an actual piece of the moon brought back by apollo astronauts.

But all the other stuff was amazing too. Actual jets and famous rockets hanging from the ceiling like enormous toys. The last time I went was in 2007, and being able to touch the actual wright flyer was cool too - although they didnt really encourage that.

According to the website, they have a 30-minute grace period for pickups/dropoffs - but I don't know if they changed the previous pay up-front/refund scheme. I live close enough, I should go check it out more.

Back when it was in pieces over in the Garber restoration facility in Suiltand, MD, I got to touch the Enola Gay. I know you're not supposed to do that, either, but it's such a piece of history......and I didn't catch the Gay from it.

The last time I was there, I pushed a button for a ticket on entering the lot, then paid at a kiosk in the museum as I was headed out. Presumably the time is encoded on the ticket; it's practically the same process that is used at my local Safeway to allow 2 hours of free parking.

I was there this summer - they're remodeling the entire building and fully half of it was closed. They even put up a temporary wall. It sucked. They should just close it and reopen once they're done.

can you still watch planes take off and land at udvar-hazy? I've been to the Air and Space in DC.  I could spend a week there.

I've twice had the pleasure of watching Patti fly, and both times she brought tears to my eyes. The joy of what she's doing radiates off of her; you can feel it on the ground.

They had a 'Lifting Body' aircraft hung from the ceiling near the X-15 if I recall.
This thing was unpowered, and looked like a big aluminum brick.
I couldn't believe anyone was crazy enough to get dropped from a B52 at 20000 feet while strapped inside.

it looked something like this

The Udvar Hazy center is still open (by Dulles Airport.)

If you happen to be stopping in, say hello to my Grandfather's plane:

There's a moon rock in Vancouver, BC without any armed guards, if you're looking for an easier target.

It's almost like if we don't lock down and make the economy take a hit, places will be forced to lock down with a much harder hit to the economy later.

Joe Biden is such a goddamn spineless disappointment. But then, 'Spineless Disappointments' could be a new name for the entire Democratic Party at this point.
