Yep. Actuarially, I am likely to live long enough for the Everglades to completely disappear. Last I checked the math 20% of Florida will disappear during my lifetime. Miami will become an island. Nothing of value will be lost.

No one will do anything about this, because money, and millions, if not billions, will die.

Billions will die because of money. F*cking money.

Thank goodness so some countries are in the process of shutting down their nuclear power plants before replacing them with renewable sources and are now burning coal instead.

Bith Set Me Up: [Fark user image 597x411]

As always, her heart is in the right place but her ideas' details are pure shiat.

The specifics of the Green New Deal  (science/tech) are terrible, and terribly undersized.   Also, it's too late.  Way too late.  Two generations too late.  Even ignoring the climate issues we're already dealing with, we needed* to build the new urban centers while we still had a lot of cheap energy/materials.  We needed to Manhattan Project things like 300K SuperConductors, Tokamaks, Lithium Air Batteries, NextGen PhotoVoltaics, CO2RR electrocatalysts, etc.

So, quite frankly, I honestly don't care that the GND isn't going to happen, because quite frankly, we're past the tipping point in terms of tech and infrastructure timelines, even if we aren't past the temperature tipping point itself.

Just wait until the Great Climate Migration starts. Y'all think we have problems with immigration now...

Also, we need something a little better than this idea of global warming average. Some places are already at 2C of rise, and the poles are warming faster than anybody, threatening a worse scenario due to methane release.

We really do need alien overlords. They could be like the cat in the hat. We can have fun and then right before Mother Earth gets angry, they help us clean up our mess. In conclusion, we're boned.

Clearly you haven't spent much time in the Keys, or you are one of those people who complains constantly if they are warm enough to sweat.

The Florida reef and the Everglades are pretty precious, people hate on Florida because of the politics (which are horrific) but I'll take a beach over mountains any day. Water warm enough to swim in, tropical fish, and coral reefs pretty much define paradise to me.

Probably gonna have a mass extinction of warm water coral too. Maybe if we're lucky there will be some hardy survivors that can still make reefs but that's not looking great.

We farked it.

Reducing the amount of CO2 we release is great, but insufficient.  We need to be working on sequestration technology to bring CO2 back down to pre-industrial levels.  Maybe even a little lower for a few decades to bleed off some accumulated heat.  And other tech to close our CO2 loop.

Will all that require more energy?  Yes.  And that's why we need to be worried about renewables and mass energy storage.

We're all going to have to take a cut in standard of living to make that happen... which is why we're pretty much going to have to drag the billionaire class out into the streets and murder them so the rest of us can get a government that will organize the whole thing.

OR we can let climate change alter the planet, driving human refugees and resource shortages to trigger wars and all have a bigger cut in standard of living, but a few more decades down the road.

/We're going with plan B.  The billionaires will be entirely insulated from the effects, and in fact will likely further concentrate wealth as the rest of us scrabble to cope.

Yup. Capitalism is a cancer, and at least as far as human civilization goes, it's terminal.

LordJiro: Capitalism is a cancer,

Unfettered

capitalism is a cancer.  "Work hard, build stuff, sell it to others and make your own life easier" is pretty damn motivating and we don't have a better system that doesn't rely on human nature being better than it actually is.

Without rules to nationalize natural resources, require a reasonable minimum of social services, or to prevent externalities and self-sustaining/growing wealth, things obviously get pretty bad... but you can have those rules and make them just as sacred as the general premise of capitalism itself.

The problem is that Florida floats on lower layers of sand and clay so some of it isn't ever going to sink.   The reality is the under-sand foundations are going to go bad but lots of people will be seeing the unstable rise in land as being an indicator of things not to worry about.

In California increased risk is not a legal reason to cancel a policy. Non-renewal is probably what happened to him.

Considering the earth warms and cools on it's own without humans, maintaining a constant temp relative to a specific time period is going to be pretty well impossible.  That's not to say we're not making things worse and don't need to do something about it, but we need to understand how much change would be happening due to the earth's natural cycles anyway to understand how big our impact is and what kind of effect we can hope to have on limiting our impact going forward.

Once everyone converts to solar and wind, we're going to find out both of those also destroy the environment.
