"294-ton superload"

You did your training on Subby's mom?

That's a lot of spare tires (nice to have a spare "Oversize load" sign too).

Serious question: how much of the weight is containment/packaging vs the actual object being transported?

Not as exciting as the time the 'Steel from the twin Towers' came thru Palmerton.

Reminds me of the time the fuselage of the plane that crash landed in the Hudson River in 2009 was transported from New Jersey to North Carolina via truck. It went through Moorestown, NJ and got stuck making a turn there.

The traffic signal at the corner shown in this image was removed to help the plane pass through. But that took time to happen

Since it's going to be scrapped, why not cut in half before the trip?

I can't think of anything much more Pennsylvania than an enormous truck blocking an entire highway while stuck in a pothole during a Century Blizzard.

Maybe Amish folks coming to the rescue bringing hot drinks & soft pretzels to the stranded motorists?

Only thing I can think of is that there isn't portable equipment strong enough to the job.  This appears to be exotic, heavy duty metal.

D1G located was inside "The Ball" was the prototype I trained on in upstate New York back in 1978. Inside 'The Ball' was a mock-up of the USS Bainbridge originally DLGN-25 (in 1975 changed to CGN-25) engine room. I met Adm. Hyman Rickover while I was an Electrician's Mate on throttleman watch. He was in the Enclosed Operating Station (EOS) and observed a SCRAM drill of the reactor.
