Cheney man sentenced to 25 years for killing wife with poisoned ice cream

He probably thought a second quail hunt would be too obvious.

Apparently he figured no one would run a basic tox screen.  Might have even worked if she was a bit older - say late 70's or so.  A lot of peaceful appearing elderly deaths pretty much get rubber stamped, no reason to look harder.  Glad this one didn't

Too old for SCUBA diving in a "tropical paradise" third world country with poor policing.

IIRC, most opioids were reformulated into extended-release form to prevent abuse. However, that can be bypassed by crushing the pills.

He claims she took prescribed pain meds, but that he got hydrocodone for a shoulder injury, which probably wasn't true. Doctors are too scared to write for opioids for anything other than post-op or a documented, long-term cause of serious pain, and they go to great lengths to let patients know exactly how to use them, which means not crushing them.  He also said he got trazadone from someone else, which is in no way suspicious.

He claims she took 3 hydrocodone and crushed them up into ice cream, but I suspect that the cops did a count on her prescription and it came out correct. So, the lethal dose had to come from his stash, along with the trazadone.

Also possible he got access to the really strong stuff, like OxyContin 30 or 60, which would kill someone used to taking one 5 mg tablet of hydrocodone every 4 hours. A tox screen might not be able to distinguish between hydrocodone and OxyContin after they have been metabolized.

I'm not so sure about that. In the article it says his problems started when someone in the family told police they thought he might have killed her. That would have happened no matter how he killed her. Depending on how he did it, he might have gotten away with it but it wouldn't have been because no one questioned her death. He would have needed to come up with a method that can't be proven even if police were looking over everything closely.

Tough call - we don't want to tell murderers how to do it, but an opioid overdose delivered by ice cream seems like a great suicide plan if/when I get my terminal diagnosis.

I've got sad news for you.  What you have now is fatal.  No one can say how long you have but you are swirling the drain.  Act now and go out on your own terms.

Detectives also interviewed a childhood friend of Pettis who said he had unsuccessfully attempted to start a romantic relationship with her prior to the death.

LULZ, his planned mistress didn't even want him. Not that she was his sole motivation, but yeah.

Dentists, on the other hand, will give you a sack of Vicodin and a 5th of Johnnie Walker for anything more aggressive than a light cleaning.

Respect.  I am properly chastened.  I still can't believe that after all these decades, there's still Weird Al I've never heard of.
