and yet there are entire skyscrapers that sit mostly empty... sure they are mostly for really rich people to launder money and dabble in real estate futures... but they don't live in them.

The median rental price for Manhattan properties, including discounts, hit $3,392 last month

That would pay my mortgage for four months, and my house in Las Vegas is almost certainly more spacious than the median property in Manhattan...and I've got a big back yard.

It seems that part of the "fun" some rich douchebags get with being rich, is the ability to deny someone
else of something...

I've always wanted to live in Manhattan, and I did for a year.

In Inwood, which is the northernmost tip of the island is kind of the foreskin of Manhattan.

I lived near Seaman and Cumming, which is without question the jizziest corner on Earth.

We fell in and out of love, she was a fantastic kisser, not such a great roomie.  I wish her the best in all her endeavors.

All I can say is, I'd hate living in Manhattan more than you'd hate living in my much-cheaper location.

The scarcity helps keep them rich.

For the low, low price of $3400 a month, you too can get pissed on by a homeless dude as you walk out your front door to almost certainly be late taking a subway from a station that hasn't had a serious upgrade in a century

And you'll count yourself lucky

As far as toney locals in Manhattan go, many have 40 acres of empty lawn in the form of a summer home.  Manhattan real estate is rarified for a reason. A nice chunk of the world would like to have at least a crash pad or pied a terre there.

Wasn't the big concern last year that everyone was moving out of NYC, that it was becoming a ghost town, that they were losing their rich base? Didn't NY lose population in comparison to FL (premature tabulation notwithstanding)? Well, we can put that fear to bed now.

Your 5th floor walkups aren't sitting vacant.

You weren't going to live on Central Park South regardless of how you tax someone who has property there.

Yes - sudden mass leavings and sudden mass returnings tend to throw the numbers all out of whack. If the rents are still increasing at this rate next year then it means something, right now its just the perception of a "sellers market" because so many folks are moving back/in.

I somehow got a reasonably priced apartment in Battery Park City with a view of the Twin Towers pre 9/11 for a job. I farking hated living in Manhattan. Wild horses could not drag me back there

Here to dogpile on the "I hate NYC" farkers. More urban paradise for the rest of us. Adventure around every corner!

Taking my 11 year old for her first visit next month. She's psyched to run around all day and night like Dad does. I splurged for a good room/hotel, but I'm usually good at the super cheap military hotel on my solo trips. I'm not there to sleep anyway. :)

I can't think of a single reason to live there.  Shop maybe.  Even eat, maybe.  But 24/7?  I'm thinking Stockholm Syndrome.

4 months in Las Vegas vs 1 months in New York?  That's an awful choice to have to make but lets see what people think.  Click Smart for NY and Funny for Vegas!

Personally, I love living in Las Vegas.  The weather is great, there's always something to do, and the people are wonderful.   I've been here for over two decades and can't think of anywhere I'd rather be.

Your mileage may vary.

Things that are in high demand and low supply having high prices is kind of exactly what capitalism does. What else would you propose is doing it?

That's about 2.5 months total expenses - soup to nuts - for me. But then again I have no debt or health insurance right now, so my biggest expenses are heating & ludicrous, swollen property taxes, not in that order.

Yea, also we are going to need a law that prevents landlords from passing those costs along to tenants.
