brigid_fitch: Can't believe Minotaur was still going.

If it wasn't the first match of the new season, I would've said "OK, this one's over." But it being the season opener told me to expect a surprise like that. And even then, I'm stunned Minotaur survived the 3 minutes.

Well, Duck is back with a new design this year.  We haven't seen it yet, but here's hoping it's as robust as before.

the problem with a category like that is there is nothing stopping anyone from just making a solid wedge shaped block of ar500 with the most basic of movement systems. no one would be able to destroy it but it wouldn't win any fights either.

needs to have a real weapon instead of the pathetic lifter it had last season.

The Bestest: so never watched it.. has anyone ever tried just a solid sphere with internal movement? sorta like BB-8?

I don't *think* there's been anything like that.  Check 'Battlebots.com'.  They have a 'Robots' section on the main menu, covering all contestants starting at the 2015 season.

There have been a *lot* of 'me too' designs, where someone comes up with an effective approach and then it gets copied a lot.  There are also a lot of wild, wacky 'I wonder if *this* will work' Wile E. Coyote type designs.

Like this year - 'Smeeeeeeeeeeeeee'.  First showed up last year.  It's basically two small robots with horizontal spinners, like 'Gemini'.  But Smeeeeeeeeeee adds an 'articulated fence' type of deal between them, the idea being to wrap itself around the opponent and immobilize it while their spinners take the opponent apart.

Not terribly effective, but many great bots got off to a slow start.  I'm doubtful they can make this thing work, but I've been wrong before.

If you're talking about Duck, yeah, it's great on 'Robust', but very light on 'Damage'.

Hmm, no Chomp this year.

Chomp always infuriated me because the two arms that held its weapon were so light and flimsy that too much of the energy in that weapon was wasted as the arms wobbled and flapped around.  They needed to be more rigid so as to transfer all of the energy to the opponent.

Serious question -

How should Battlebots be handled on Fark?  STEM tab, Sports, Fandom, or Discussion?

(And, as an aside, the James Webb Space Telescope has begun unfolding the side wings of the Primary Mirror.  Cue the 'Transformers' sound effects.)

So, what did we learn from the season opener?

1) Looks like the Fad of the Day is Flamethrowers.  Maybe instead of 'Fight Night', this season should be christened 'Flame Wars'?

2) No matter how safe and easy a bout looks, an upset can happen to *anyone*.

3) The evolution of weapons is continuing smoothly, with a lot of bots reaching *really scary* levels of damage.

4) The BattleBox might need even more reinforcement than its gotten.

5) Sometimes, you have to tweak your bot to match how the judges interpret the rules.

6) Anyone know if there were any rules changes affecting 'Double Jeopardy'?  As the only bot to ever use a "gun", it had been limited to only one shot, and was largely ineffective.  Any changes to number of shots or type of projectiles?

7) Fancy paint jobs are becoming more popular.

8) Have we seen any notable 3-D printing in the bots yet?

9) I've heard there are now rules that if you have a little subsidiary bot, it had better be actually fighting.  Anyone know anything about that?

10) Yeti still makes me think of Pikachu when I see its profile pic.

I like Chomp because the designer keeps trying to push the envelope with new designs. They rarely seem to work but it's always cool to see what she comes up with next.

Like this fight. Zoe got rid of the flimsy arms to make the hammer more effective but didn't count on the fuel tank exploding and roasting Chomp from the inside. Also, she may want to add rubber tips on Chomp's feet for more friction and grab. That little Balespear pushed around a 500lb bot like it was nothing.

I believe she's also experimented with using AI for weapon control.  But it frustrated me that she took so long to make the weapon support less flimsy.  Maybe she's taking this year off for re-engineering?

How big could you make a solid wedge of AR500 (with batteries, R/C, motors and wheels) before you exceeded the 250 lb weight limit?

Hmmm...  AR500 is .283 lbs / cu. in.  Let's say we leave 50 lbs for batteries, motors, R/C, and wheels - which is probably too little.  200 lbs of AR500 is about 706 cu. in, so you could make a wedge about 20" wide by 5" high by 14" long.

Actually a little bigger, since you'd need internal hollows for the guts.  Call it 'Battering Ram'?

Should have added, last year a *LOT* of bots were having trouble getting traction in the BattleBox, legs, wheels, whatever.  Maybe if they don't fix it, someone will go back to rubber caterpillar treads?  They've been used before.

rules say you cant just have a wedge for your weapon. but yea something like that. nothing is getting through 2.5 in of ar500 plate.

True.  I was only considering raw engineering.  I've never sat down and read the rules, but I'm not surprised they have that covered.
