Sure, the guy is against massive wealth inequality, systemic injustices, and forcing people into bankruptcy to survive their medical bills. But we have to consider the possibility he's only doing it for his ego, and the only real reason people want him in a position of power is because a bird landed on his podium. Not to mention he's an Independent which means he might just randomly fark off and vote lockstep with Republicans for no apparent reason. Unlike our dyed-in-the-wool Democrats like Joe Manchin, who is a more reliable Democratic vote.

Funny that he was raging so hard back then when all of the things he wanted were already in place in 1978 - strong union labour participation, a 70% tax rate on the rich, and a university education was imminently affordable. Now he sounds like a Trumper. Let's go back to those halcyon days when I was young and everything was the way I want to be now but I still wasn't satisfied!

So... that's why things are going so well for everyone? Because capitalism totally works, and the insane level of wealth inequality we have is completely fine? Good thing the super rich have saved us from socialized healthcare.

This is late stage capitalism. Covid, the supply chain problems, and the current economic issues that are building up to is late stage capitalism failing its stress test.

Poverty is still a thing.
Wage slavery is even more the norm in the new gig/service economy.
The economy is controlled or at the least overly influenced by a few monied families.
And American media has gone so far off the rails conspiracy theories replicate daily like a virus, it's even turning people in other countries batshiat.
He wasn't wrong.
He still isn't.
Comparison to the grifting lunatic Ron Paul are laughably off the mark.

Pay attention. If you seem someone saying something outlandish sh*tty, check their account date. I do it a lot. And 9 times out of 10 they're from 2003. Sometimes 04 or 05, but far more rarely. As someone who was a teenager in the 70s, I can say it was a mix of good and bad. Inflation in the mid-70s was 9.13%. We were bleeding manufacturing jobs to Asia. We had the oil embargo of 1973 which caused massive lines at gas statins and inflated prices for gas. On the other hand, you could still support a family on one income, unions were still strong, and concerts were much cheaper than today.  I paid $12.00 to see The Rolling Stones in 1978, which is the equivalent of $50 in 2021 dollars, and I paid $2.50 to see Star Wars in the theater on its 1977 release.

Long haul Farkers are an interesting bunch. My guess it the break has to do with moderation due to Drew wanting the site to become advertiser friendly (I'm late enough that there were mods but early enough I remember the Boobies tab). I miss the professional community, especially the constitutional lawyers, here that used to be really good at bs-filtering news and teaching people about their expertise. Mostly it's just people rehashing the same arguments these days, with very few experts in their fields.

I would have loved him as President, but he didn't have the numbers from the beginning and didn't get much better.  So... being a democracy and all, he didn't win the nomination.  It's happened before, several times every four years.

Why is this STILL a thing?
