Had a long text-chat yesterday with an old "friend" I hadn't talked to in years.  He had totally bought into the anti-vax, anti-mask, "what about the children-they need to be mask free or their development is messed up", Oath Keepers are patriots, Democrats were spreading lies about Russia and Trump, etc etc.

I asked him where he got his info, and most of it was online crap on Facebook and YouTube. Joe Rogan.  He also said that he has started to not watch Fox because they are sellouts.

He says the government wants to take his hunting rifles. The government wants to inject him with untested vaccines.

I asked him "why do you fly on planes that were tested by the government?  Why do you trust the science of aeronautics but not vaccines?"

Silence.

These people won't listen. So, what needs to happen is they need to be marginalized in their beliefs. The people in Congress who supported the coup need to be marginalized if not thrown out. House and Senate.

It will be a mess, and unprecedented. But it has to happen, and it has to happen soon.

It's been too long to generate the necessary amount of outrage. Additionally, very little of what they'll reveal is likely to surprise us. All that could possibly result from this is recommended legislation, and depending on the nature of that legislation, may end up actually coming down on leftist activists instead of right-wing violent extremists.

What we really need at this point is announcements about indictments and charges. Anything else is political theater.

I'm to the point that I would love to see them refer Trump for criminal prosecution, just to see what the Justice Department does.

Now that would move some popcorn futures.

Very true.

We know what happened. We know the facts. We can even deduce more than that. Whether people accept these facts is a real issue but at that point I can't help people who watch the video and want to say it was all antifaa or whatever.

How the facts are interpreted is what is key. That will impact suburban moms, people who are moderates, etc. The middle 10-20% needs to be solidly on the side that there is no doubt about what happened and that they don't want to side with the 20-30% who will never believe anything but the crap on fox and all the misinformation.

I want to believe that the committee realizes the seriousness of the accusation and hence want to make sure that the evidence is all lined up. So when it is released, it should be undeniable.

This Committee is extraordinary. For all our sakes, we can only hope what happened on January 6th, and the days leading up to the rally are documented.

I will say, that with only two Republicans on board, this called committee comes off as highly partisan. If they wanted to remain 'neutral' they should've had an even split.

In the end though, recommendations will be made, complaints and legal legal legal things may be done but it has always ultimately been up to 'We the People' to insure the safety of America, and the integrity of elections, especially when the people's voices (and votes) are being lost, thrown out, and tampered with.

And who knows how long this will take, why, by next year if we're lucky, the Committee will have some fresh members who will waste no time in finishing their investigation. And isn't that what we all really want? An end to investigations and wasting tax other money on nothing more than a documentation of what really happened that day. It was all on TV, and live streamed and posted on social medias. We already know. Stop 🛑 this committee from being dead weight.

I don't doubt those numbers per se but the difference between cnn and msnbc, for instance, is more than one might assume. And if you lump the 10% online with the 40% fox you get over half.

CNN and msnbc and npr and all the progressive news feeds made a fatal error as far back as 2000...in an effort to be balanced like Crossfire they entertained positions that were clearly nuts and wrong. Anti vax positions should never have been entertained as legit. It's not science, never has been.

Let's make a deal. You find more than two Republicans in Congress who are not treasonweasels committed to denigrating the January 6 Committee and all investigations into the events, and I will endorse them to be added to the Committee.

This will end up just like the Mueller report, so much pre-hype and then nothing. The (R)s by their very nature have no shame or decency, so nothing will tarnish their reputation. The (D)s will jump up and down and then f**k themselves in the end by virtue signaling to their base some cause that will lose them elections (instead of just quietly impacting the unpopular while loudly promoting the popular).

It makes you wonder how the Democrats can plan to hold anyone accountable while at the same time their McConnell approved conservative head of the DOJ is saying "there is nothing to see here" because he is handing out misdemeanors ensuring they don't lose any conservative voters?

There are some differences.

Mueller investigation was always going to be hamstrung by virtue of the fact that it did not have presidential prosecutorial authority because of the Justice Department memo that said they could not indict a sitting president. The procedure is it gets turned over to Congress for impeachment, which is what happened.

This Congressional committee does not have prosecutorial powers either, but makes recommendations to Justice. However, congress can censure, or can remove people from congress, or take them off committees, or whatever.

Justice will prosecute if facts are clear. I have a feeling that this may be different than Mueller the moment people are put under oath.

"True accountability may be fleeting. Congressional investigations are not criminal cases and lawmakers cannot dole out punishments. Even as the committee works, Trump and his allies continue to push lies about election fraud while working to place similarly minded officials at all levels of state and local government."

Its hard to believe that paragraphs like these are just part of the normal news now. Hey, the folks who tried to overturn the last election won't be held accountable and are currently actively and successfully setting the stage for the next attempt. It started in the 2000 election and on 9/11. The first called into question our election process as a democracy, the second called into question our comfortable illusion of safety. We responded to both poorly, and we are now in a situation where we are the grown up child who was told he was awesome only to find out that he is mediocre at best.

Republicans shot it down, and did so specifically so that they could paint whatever came to light through that committee as 'highly partisan'.

Why do you suppose they aren't evenly split?  What would have happened if the Democratic Committee Chair had tried to make it bipartisan?  I wonder why he didn't.  I'm sure the GOP would have wanted to be on that committee, and I'm sure they wouldn't have tried to put suspected accomplices on the committee, because that would signal their intent to disrupt the investigation, and they wouldn't do that.

Yeah, it would have been better if it was bipartisan.  We can never know why it's not.
