Yeah.  I thought about that word choice, too. Don't they mean "a trove?"

I don't know why they're going through the effort, Zuckerberg will happily sell them anything they want, they just need to get on the same discount plan as the Russians.

I have no doubt that US intelligence agencies are doing the same thing; any intelligence service that doesn't have a department scraping every social media account they can access is completely incompetent. They also have departments that subscribe to all kinds of foreign periodicals and people whose job is to collate and compare those to triangulate what information is missing/hidden.

That reminds me of a story I one heard...

New Years Eve 1998 or so, there was an AT&T satellite farm up in Montana. A security guard who had been written up previously for entering the area where the satellites were, kept going in because the area was warm in the dead of winter. Which was of course due to the transmitters.

Story goes that the day shift on January 1st couldn't find the guard for shift change. They searched and found him dead in the satellite dish area. Allegedly because of a mix of increased bandwidth of everyone calling to wish each other happy New Years, and the interference of someone sleeping in front of a dish, the transmitter got cranked up and the guard was microwaved to death in their sleep.

How true is the story? No idea. Though I do know that pidgins do get roasted by metropolitan area microwave transmitters.

It's an old urban legend - even on Snopes somewhere I believe.  Far as I know (which is admittedly not too far) no one's actually managed to get dead that way.  Fall off transmission towers or electrocute themselves while working them/farking around climbing them?  Yeah on a regular basis.  Get microwaved?  No

I used to manage a SFTP server for a well known car company. I used to amuse myself going through the access logs, and seeing all the attempted hacks from China and Russia. Too stupid to even use a proxy. I'd trace them back to places like the Beijing Institute of Technology.

It's not like I dislike the Chinese people. They're people just like anybody else, but their government is filled with fascist totalitarian bastards. Fark the Chinese government.

I do some work on the local military base and had to take their cyber security class. It points out the really dumb things people do on social media."Hey! Unit 123, will all 56 tanks and 27 rocket launchers is going to that hot spot in Afghanistan on Thursday! Wish us luck!" type of thing.

Priapetic: I don't know why they're going through the effort, Zuckerberg will happily sell them anything they want, they just need to get on the same discount plan as the Russians.

That would entail 1) Paying Zuckerberg when it's cheaper for them to have their own people hack in, and 2) giving away what information they have access to. Paying is for US businesses.

The DGSE is undoubtedly doing the same too, and the Congolese ANR for that matter. Spy agencies spy on people, in whatever way. Not that I approve of the sort of thing all those agencies do, but I'm always amazed that anyone is surprised that they do it.

I mean, it's always considered in poor taste to do it too openly but spies gonna spy.
