Hey, when you're trying to sell arena tour tickets and shoddy merchandise you can't limit your customer base to the ones who are actively killing themselves by the thousands each and every day.

Sales aren't like elections. You can't just have Republican legislatures decide you sold the most MAGA hats and award you the steak knives incentive.

I love them quoting a bunch of strategists saying he's just trying to expand his base and not only appeal to extremists. As if we haven't all seen four years of him as President and how literally every decision he makes is based on his own vanity. He's talking about vaccines now because the Biden Administration said nice things about his Administration getting vaccines developed and he wants the credit and glory. There is no strategy beyond that and never has been.

His pivot towards the mainstream is just a calculated step in actively kicking off the 2024 campaign. I guess this means he's officially running as opposed to just grifting until early 2023.

Up here in my neck of the woods we had a guy try to shank a bartender a couple of days ago for asking him to show his vax card before he would be served. the comments from all the GQP nutters on the relevant FB pages are all about how she probably deserved it because it's discrimination, and practically the same thing as putting people in cattle cars to be shipped off to Auschwitz.

He's way more than a day late, and only 850,000 and counting short of his too late death stance.

His supporters are turning on him and he's trying hard as hell to regain the suburban voters. Seems killing them and their kids wasn't a winning message in 2020. However, without that 30% base, suburban women alone still won't get him past the finish line.

Add in the omicron wave in another 2-3 weeks and the USA is most likely going to surpass 1.25 million deaths. Especially when in just the past 2 days the USA has recorded over a million new infections. And, that doesn't include states like FL that are purposely under-reporting their infection and death numbers. The R voter death count is surpassing a lot of margins of error in what were tight races in 2020.

Discussed this issue with an anti-vaxxer yesterday.  Was told, in so many words, that this moment of lucidity from Trump was an unfortunate aberration.  So I don't think that it will have the effect that you hope it does.  I do agree with you, however, that what Trump said was (for once) salutary notwithstanding his entirely narcissistic motives for having said it.

That's of course assuming those voters survive until '22 or '24, and that's not looking likely.

Florida is going to be a real example of this next year. DeSantis won his last election by 30,000 votes. The 2018 US senate win for Rick Scott was a 10,000 vote margin. Almost 70,000 people have officially died of Covid in Florida - unofficially number are definitely higher. Killing off your margin of victory doesn't seem like a winning strategy.

Covid 19 started during his administration; he should claim it since he owns it.

2021-12-31 8:55:18 AM
I think TFG made a big mistake by coming out in favor of vaccines.

His base is the "poorly educated".

The poorly educated tend to resent scientists for the respect they receive as a result of being well educated.

Part of TFG's appeal to his base was that he came from an Ivy League background, but it was obvious from the way he talked that he was just as poorly educated as a high school drop-out living in a trailer park. They could identify with TFG because he was dumb as a sack of rocks, and if TFG could run things, than so could they.

Now that TFG is playing Dr. Vaccinemaker, he is identifying himself as a "scientist", and therefore as just one more smarty pants looking down their nose at the poorly educated.

If we can just get a photo of TFG wearing a lab coat while holding a test tube full of fizzing green liquid, his most fanatic followers may well turn on TFG, like a pack of feral dogs.

It is sort of like The Emperor's New Clothes, except in this case, the Emperor is the one who surprises everyone by declaring he's been walking around stark naked the whole time, and they were all fools for pretending otherwise.

This "pivot towards the mainstream" is nothing more than a Stimulus/Response reaction to Biden publicly patting Trump's empty fat head about rolling out a vaccine program. Biden's team figured out a way to make Fat Donny toe the line by appealing to Trump's preening vanity, and it worked.

Granted....it wasn't splitting the atom - but it served a two pronged approach:  Maybe it will get some more vaccinated.  But it will also put, at the very lease, a dent in his base:  Between the rioters who never got a pardon and now 'I'm the best vaccine guy EVER!', other republicans are going to be using the 'I'm the greatest vaccine guy ever' clip in their ads, and let the Trump cult destroy their chosen ones and further divide the races where Trump endorsement is given.

They have hard coded anti-vaxxing as part of their identities now - even Trump can't overcome that.

20-20 hindsight here.  Praising your opponent is generally a terrible idea in a popularity contest, which is what politics is.  TFG is a volatile random actor.  No one knows what he's going to say or do, and that includes the TFG himself.  He makes it up as he goes along and just says whatever springs into his fevered mind at the moment.  He could have just as easily latched onto the praise and ridiculed Biden to resign since he now admits TFG did such a good job.  Biden took a real risk here and it paid off.  He's managed to do something no one has figured out how to do in four years: drive a wedge in TFG's base and finally elicit some actual criticism from them aimed at TFG.

There is no doubt that the conservative movement has caused massive harm during the pandemic by opposing mask wearing and vaccination.

However, that is only one angle and it applies primarily to white Republicans.

Looking at my own city, Cleveland, something else has been going on.

Fark user imageView Full Size

In case the text is a bit blurry, "COVID-19 cases in Cleveland have risen to 5,806 new cases this week alone. This is higher than at any time during the COVID-19 pandemic and is 2-3 times higher than we observed one year ago. The new rate of infections is 1,524 per 100,000 residents in Cleveland - 30-times higher than substantial risk (defined as 50 new cases per week/100,000 people)."

The city is only 44.4% fully vaccinated.

The city is heavily democratic. This November's mayoral race wasn't D vs. R, as there was no Republican on the ballot. It was simply what flavor of Democrat.

Black residents account for 48.8% of Cleveland's population, 64.5% of new cases, and have a 34.91% vaccination rate.

White residents account for 40% of the city's population, 21.5% of new cases and have a 51.05% vaccination rate.

This is the city proper. Not the wider metropolitan area. These figures on race are all included in the weekly reports the city puts out.

There is a *massive* disparity in vaccination rates between black and white residents (though both are well below the goal of 70-80%).

It's not partisan politics. This is a *very* blue city.

What messaging is missing? What access is missing?

Republicans have truly been awful but they are not at the root for what is happening in Cleveland and I suspect Cleveland isn't the only city where this sort of dynamic is occuring.

Blaming and shaming Republicans, while a wonderful past time, won't actually help address a massive racial disparity in vaccination status.
