By similar logic Super Mario is dehumanizing to Italian plumbers, as players force them to ingest mushrooms and plants (drug use!), murder other lifeforms (violence!), and live out unrealistic damsel-in-distress fantasies (unrealistic relationship expectations!).

I'll take my social sciences research money, thanks.

Doc is getting his 15 minutes of fame by tweeting all that the day after Madden's death. I think it's shiatty and opportunistic to do that.

There's plenty to criticize about the NFL.  The difficulty in getting them to provide for retired players who suffered debilitating injuries making the league tons of $ is at the top of the list.  But comparing it to a plantation is beyond a bad reach.

I've never really gotten into sports simulators and really couldn't care less about any of them, Madden football included. But this is easily one of the dumbest hot takes I've ever read on the internet. Hey, the guy uses the "Dr." honorific in his Twitter handle, though, so I guess that means he's supposed to be taken seriously?

This is a textbook definition of what "trying too hard to find a new angle" looks like.

Don't know anything about American Football.  Just assumed Madden was the TFG of football but knew how to hold on to money.

Madden liked looking serious and putting his face on football video games

Leo had the handheld football game in the 70's.  You had to buy the AA batteries if you wanted to play the game with him.  Maybe 15 minutes after lunch and he kept the batteries.

When the Wii came out I picked up a GameCube for $39. The store has a bunch of discs under $5 and I picked up a Madden football game for 99 cents. I figured it would help me understand the game better when I'm watching the superb owl. It did, and the game was fun.

But Madden's voice overs were hilarious. They were just so generic, but delivered with such enthusiastic gravitas that, surely, his verbal meanderings must be conveying something important.

He seems like he would have been fun to have a beer with.

RIP John Madison

John Madden was awesome. Was an offensive lineman when he played and then a super bowl winning coach. Then went on to be the TV announcer for all the big games.

The original game developer spent a week on a train with Madden talking football so that he could really understand the sport and how it would best translate to a video game.

There's a whole episode dedicated to it in the docuseries "High Score" on Netflix.

One of the asian players is probably in the penalty box for goal tending.

I'd be hurt if I was related to John Madden here. This schmuck is really not being kind - there's zero evidence he was anything but cordial to black players, no evidence he was in any way racist. He wasn't the problem. There's a Plantation mentality among many higher ups, especially in the college ranks and NFL owners, but there's no evidence Madden was among them. And there's nothing wrong with a violent game. Now, there's a big problem in how the NFL hid the long-term effects of CTE. But a coach from the 70's is pretty far afield from that. He's the major figure probably least related to the NFL's problems.

The Plantation is what the players themselves call the NFL corporation, it's been that way since at least the early 00s, that's fairly common knowledge if you follow football.
