It figures Gorsuch sided with the virus.  He's trying to step up his game from being just a common thief.

It's astounding to me that we have anti-vax supreme court justices now.

This is some apocalyptic shieet here.

No shiat. Common sense drives getting caregivers in nursing homes vaccinated against the diseases the elderly and the ambulatory are vulnerable to. Rarely do common sense and the law diverge, even in extreme situations.

Gorsuch sounds more like an idiot and/or a purely political Justice.

But if she has a 5% chance of getting pregnant on the pill, and a 5% chance of getting pregnant while using a condom, then by doing both she has a 10% chance of getting pregnant!

/That's how statisticals work, right?

COVID is endemic. And there is no convincing the selfish to vaccinate.

Many more idiots will die. Too many non-idiots who tried their best to protect themselves and others will die. Republicans will facilitate this death and then look around the room as if to ask "what happened?" They won't learn until they are intubated.

Just try to protect yourselves and those you care about. Natural selection is happening in real time, with unfortunate collateral damage.

There are no religious reasons not to get vaccinated.  The resisters are 'I demand to be totally irresponsible and endanger my life, and the lives of everyone I come in contact with!'

It's chronic immaturity, not any religion.

The GOP played the long game. They started seeding partisan judges everywhere, people with no fidelity to precedent or law, only the religious, menial cult, and they've succeeded immensely. There's no way out of this, not for generations.

I wish it was endemic, but it's not. It's a pandemic.

Jesus Christ that argument makes no f*cking sense whatsoever.

2021-12-20 2:12:53 AM
"..a State might argue, for example, that it has a compelling interest in achieving herd immunity against certain diseases in a population. It might further contend the most narrowly tailored means to achieve that interest is to restrict vaccine exemptions to a particular number divided in a nondiscriminatory manner between medical and religious objectors. With sufficient evidence to support claims like these, the State might prevail."

Holy fark, that is one of the most insane things I have ever read. Gorsuch apparently believes that the Constitution says that people who are in legitimate medical danger from a vaccine should be forced to take it so some random nutter asshole doesn't have to.

It is currently a pandemic. It has also, almost certainly, become endemic. There was a chance at the beginning that the virus could have been eradicated like small pox but that would have required a rational pandemic response from the GQP death cult and an American public with an IQ higher than burnt toast.

The virus is with us forever now. Fingers crossed that we manage to beat it down to a level where it's just another seasonal upper respiratory infection that kills a few thousand people ever year

This makes me yearn for the early days of the culture war when the worst you'd get is an overly aggressive ass wishing you "MERRY CHRISTMAS" or have to sit through your drunken uncle rant about football players kneeling.

Who would have guessed the culture wars would have forced Grammie and Grampy to become casualties in the holy crusade to stick it to libs?  What's next?

combined with gutting education via funding cuts, banning books, etc., and now it's trendy to push for public money to support private religious schools. plus there's going to be a new wave of full-on antivaxxers - parents who would have gotten their kids the standard set without batting an eye, but now think they're all evil and/or anti-freedom. that'll thin their ranks some, but it's going to get plenty of non-crazies sick/killed too.

All of Trump's justices are GQP operatives despite Robert's bat shiattery about there not being Dem or GQP justices.  McConnell saw to that.

It's not just for COVID. The modern Republican Party of insanity is fully on board with a version of "freedom of religion" that doesn't mean freedom to believe in the faith of your choosing, but in the right to inflict your belief on everyone around you, regardless of its impact on them.
Only a matter of time before it's chick fil a refusing to serve gay people or unmarried couples or Muslims (they already won't hire them) or landlords refusing section 8 vouchers based on prosperity gospel bullshiat.

I'm okay with not allowing medical exemptions either. If your health doesn't permit you to work in a given field safely I see no reason you should have a right to work in that field anyway. Go do something else.

We are trying to save nursing home patients from disease here right? The ability to get vaccinated against disease sounds to me like every bit as much of a bona fide occupational qualification as the ability to lift 100 pounds.

Given that there's legal precedent for government mandate of innoculation in the interest of public health, that Justice should be immediately impeached.  They're incompetent.

cefm: Only a matter of time before it's chick fil a refusing to serve gay people

In about half the states, there is literally nothing preventing a business from refusing to serve, hire or promote people for no reason other than the fact they seem gay.

In those states, it's perfectly legal for Chris the Baptist boss to say, "Bruce, you're doing great work, but I heard you were queer and I don't want any f@gs in my shop, so you're fired." Bruce has no grounds to sue. However, if gay Bruce was the boss and said "Chris, you're doing great work, but I heard you go to church and I don't want any Baptists in my shop, so you're fired" Chris could sue and win easily. What's the difference? A powerful majority provides itself special rights & protections, and makes the same unavailable to a harmless minority.

In the other half of states which do offer some protection from discrimination, the faithful insist that the First Amendment means they alone get to decide which laws bind them, and if a state law says they can't discriminate against the queers, that law cannot possibly be understood apply to them. The Roberts Court has found considerable merit in this argument, even as it diligently ignores the fact that LGBT people meet literally every single test the Court has ever invented to make a protected class of other groups.

This has produced the perverse situation that under the current Equal Protection jurisprudence, LGBT American citizens have less legal protection from discrimination than non-citizens (who are a protected group).
