Nicely written article, though I don't care much for CNN.

I can think of way better places to move to than Canada. It's cold up there. C'mon people, go somewhere warm!

I, for one, welcome our new Democratic American overlords.

/the fact that I'm posting a cliche like this makes me sick...

Canada, which has an ailing health care system and relatively high levels of personal taxation.

Yeah can't wait to get up there...

I understand, the way they feel, but this is MY country dammit! I'm staying and fighting for it.

Grow up! Its just an election.

You're not getting into our country that easily. Fix your own farking country first, don't come running because you don't like which way the wind is blowing.

The US is a conservative country and likely always will be.

A good thing for uber-patriots to remember when they suggest that people who don't like America can just move somewhere else: it's not that easy. My friend has been waiting for years for all his paperwork to sort out so he can move to New Zealand. It's not a simple matter of getting on a boat, flipping off the American shore, and traveling to those oh-so-worse countries.

2004-11-03 04:15:28 PM
It's no colder up here in most places, than say, New York in the winter.

If you want to get into the express lane, it's best if you have a criminal record or better yet, running from the law.

2004-11-03 04:15:32 PM
I'm staying the fark put. Why let the Republicans have the US to themselves? If Democrats leave, it'll only make it more Republican.

Anybody who leaves now is a surrender monkey.

2004-11-03 04:15:34 PM
I don't see why people want to move to Canada. It's only a matter of time before Bush invades that too.

Immigrants to Canada... Do no fit into the same taxation bracket as native canadians.

"Whenever I mention to Canadians that I bring people to Canada as a tax haven, they shake their heads in disbelief. After all, Canada has a well deserved reputation for having some of the highest marginal tax rates amongst the OECD countries. What most Canadians do not realize is that Canada has a well established regime of tax sheltering to attract new residents that it does not offer to its indigenous population. With proper pre-immigration tax planning, wealthy individuals can move to Canada and avoid income and capital gain tax on their non-Canadian source income and capital gain producing assets. In addition, since Canada. Does not have an estate tax, it is often considered as a favorable domicile of choice. Furthermore, while Canada does not have an instant citizenship program it does allow those who have been permanent residents for three years to acquire a Canadian passport. Being one of the most treasured travel documents in the world, the Canadian passport provides visa-free travel to most countries and allows the holder to take advantage of the North American Free Trade Agreement to live and work in the United States. Finally, as a result of the recent decline in the Canadian dollar, residents can enjoy an excellent lifestyle with all of the infrastructure of living in the United States at almost two thirds of the cost."

I'll be placing my bet that maybe 1 out of 500,000 people that said "If Kerry doesn't get elected I'm going to Canada" actually follow up on their statement.

On the other hand, if Bush does issue a draft, I'll be there to help any draft dodgers sneak across the boarder.

Just remember America- You made your choice, now you have to live with it for 4 years.

I can't believe that article mentioned that Americans could claim refugee status in Canada in order to get work permits easier. Any American that applies as a refugee should be forced to spend 6 months in Haiti or Sudan to help them reconsider what it means to be a refugee.

I thought you disgruntled leftists were all heading to Costa Rica or New Zealand. If you leave, my vote means more, so by all means, go.

Is Michael Moore in Canada yet? He's well padded for winter conditions, so it could behe's already there...

Haven't seen or heard from him since yesterday.

/Bonus - Canada recognises Muslim Laws!

Ha! I've been joking with my friends and co-workers for the past few months that I'd move to Canada if Bush won. This article was the PERFECT thing to send them after Kerry conceded defeat!

/ Would never actually move because of an election. America is strong enough to survive a bad presidency.

// Would like to visit Canada, though. [homer] Beer and hockey....mmmmmmmm [/homer]

"Let me tell you -- if they're hard-working honest people, there's a process, and let them apply," Immigration Minister Judy Sgro told Reuters.

I guess that rules out the majority of Democrats.

If all democrats move to Canada, then only Canada will have democrats.

Just about every "welfare-loving liberal" I've met around here, Vieri has had the Reform/Conservative signs out on their lawns. Your stereotype sucks.

What a bunch of sad sacks the Democrats have become. Lose an election and up and move your entire family to Canada? Lame.

/surprised Kerry didn't pull an Al Gore for the next five weeks

... Canada, which leans more to the left than the United States and has traditionally favored the Democrats over the Republicans.

... Canada, which has an ailing health care system and relatively high levels of personal taxation.

Makes sense to me.

2004-11-03 04:23:22 PM
Typically Rightwing neoliberal media. Lying about the conditions in other countries to make America look better. Polls show that over 90% of Canadians prefer their healthcare system to ours. Our healthcare system is a laughingstock in the rest of the world. And as for high levels of personal taxation, i dount it. From what my research indicates igf the the lower income 60% of Americans moved to Canada and made the same income, they would pay about the same or less. It is the higher income earners who pay more. THat is the way it is in ALL western industrialized countries, except America.

Canada has an "ailing healthcare system"?! Compared to what, America, where 40 million Americans cannot even afford healthcare and 100 million or more are trapped in their jobs because they cannot get healthcare otherwise....

I have looked into moving to Canada for haelthcare. My mother was born there, which gives me automatic citizenship. Also I can move to Ireland as an automatic citizen (my grandmother was born in Belfast). The UK would also take me, but it takes 5 years for citizenship.

Italy also takes in immigrants under this "grandmother rule". I would advise any young person to look into immigrating to a NW European country, as the citizens there have it pretty good compared to the AVERAGE American.
