The original caller said it was a huge snapper and didn't know what to do with it, so he called 911

If I had a nickel for every time that happened to me...

If that's a 100lbs snapper, that game warden is JACKED just holding it like it's a 20lb tortoise all nonchalantly. The deadly beak, the ripping claws...dude needs a raise for his bravery, and the 911 caller needs a trip to the zoo's reptile exhibit.

I had a African hingeback tortoise I named Vern . It was fifteen years old when I finally realized that it wasn't a male since she started laying eggs. The most boring pet ever. She was always constipated and I finally gave her to a better home where she is regularly pooping and laying eggs. They live a long time.

I knew you'd make a mistake one day. And now I've got your name, and I've got your ass. Expect a visit in 20-30 years cakeman.

From the sub-headline:
"Wildlife officials in Pennsylvania said an escaped African tortoise went for a walk down the middle of a road, prompting 911 calls from concerned residents"

How much do you want to bet that none of this would have happened if this was an albino turtle?!

That summer we went to Grandma's farm and took our pet tortoise with us. Nice warm summer day, so we put the tortoise on the lawn to munch and wander around. Taped a big red ribbon bow on the shell so we could see it if it went outside the mown lawn. Planted Dad beside it in a lawn chair, reading his newspaper.

That was the last we ever saw of him. The tortoise I mean, Dad's still around. Still doesn't see or hear anything when reading his paper.

Every summer after that I searched for him, but never found his shell or the ribbon.

/ Dad still insists they just did not send the tortoise to a large farm up north
// yeah, our tortoise was faster than Dad
/// did you know tortoises look funny when you turn them on their backs and spin them

CSB: I got a sulcata in 1999. I was at a pet store and wanted a Russian tortoise and I wanted it specifically because they live for 30-50 years. In the terrariums were several sulcata and they were so cute! Small, like silver dollar sized, had really sharp corners on the shell (both the individual scales and the edges), and active. I asked the person working how big they got, and he pointed to other terrarium with football sized tortoises. So I got him and named him George. The first couple of years was easy, he lived inside and got bigger...and bigger....and bigger. George now weighs as of his yearly check-up in October 84lbs. He is SMART, knows his name and will come over to me when I walk in his yard, he won't let anyone other than me or my daughter pet him. He moved outside when he dug through the sheet rock in his room. He has a very nice doghouse he dug under for a summer hangout and sits in the doghouse and pouts when it is raining. Once I got his enclosure right and safe, about a year of trial and error, he is a low maintenance pet. They dig, a lot, and MUST be kept above 50 degrees. His yard is 15x15 with the fencing buried two feet down and reinforced with concrete. Getting the doghouse heating correct was the challenge but achieved through well insulated walls, floor and roof with recessed light with a heat lamp. If you think you want one, please research first and make plans in your will, zoos don't want them and properly taken care of they WILL outlive you, and quite possibly your kids. /CSB
