I think that's gotta be the shortest amount of text I've seen before the paywall.

Only "restaurant" I've ever seen a live rat running through was in Penn Station.

I've seen the mock ups of the redesigned Penn Station. It's pretty. As a commuter, the station as is is functional, which is all it needs to be.

That's it. I've crossed a threshold. Too much fark. Nowhere else on the internet do I find articles about penis stations. I'm out.

You heard "penis station" and outer yourself?  You must be easily triggered.
I support you, but how did your mom handle it?

The penis mightier...

No but for real: eff the paywall, are they actually putting the Penn station under MSG on the historical places list?

Why?

Amen. Now if only they could fix the Port Authority Bus Terminal. That farking thing is a hell hole of a maze.

I couldn't get past the pay wall either, but I think the concern is actually about the buildings surrounding Penn Station instead of the dark dingy basement disguised as a train station.

If it's anything like the Moynihan station it'll be this wide open sterile area with no seating and yet somehow the PA system is worse.

Because they've decided they want to also do something about MSG. NYC wants to more or less keep them where they are and upgrade them. The state wants to tear down the whole thing and some of the surrounding area, rebuild them both, and add some new housing(likely luxury). I'm guessing this is a move by NYC handled through their allies at the state level.

Or something like that. I might be mixing it up a bit, but I heard this story on the radio the other day.

And over here, you have the staircase where Kevin Costner shot it out with Al Capone and a bunch of Nazis...

Believe it or not this version of Penn Station, at least the LIRR corridor, is better than what was there 30 years ago. Before it was renovated it felt like walking through an overgrown subway station. As to MSG, aside from being in a great mass transit location -- meh.

I never understood this.  We are fighting to keep ancient buildings that were never very pretty to begin with just because they are old.  If they outlived their functionality or are in gross need of repairs where it's cheaper to rebuild.. rebuild it.   I have been to both places, for the most part they are nasty.
90% of Penn Station looks like it Stat at the bottom of a toilet for a while.  It stinks and is dimly lit.  Bring in something more modern, more functional and easier to maintain.

Kind of funny and somewhat relevant story. I was walking through Port Authority with my headphones on heading to catch a bus. I enter and hear a crash followed by gunfire. I hit the ground and everyone's looking at me like I'm a crazy person. Apparently they were filming the third Jason Bourne movie and the PA system was blaring announcements to this effect. I felt bloody stupid.

It is the 4th MSG and the longest standing, it being around since 1968.
Interesting note from wiki:

Madison Square Garden is the last of the NBA and NHL arenas to not be named after a corporate sponsor.

That picture started the historical preservation movement in NYC.

It's great if you're taking Amtrak from Rhinecliff or Hudson and aren't going anywhere else but the Garden.

LIRR, NJT and the 8th and 7th Ave subway lines don't count?

The loss of Penn Station actually saved Grand Central Station from a similar fate.

Gulper has serious problems with NY and NJ, despite regularly showing he has no idea how NY and NJ work. Just ignore it.
