And that's fine. We can't always be prepared.
The only thing I'm prepared to do is take a nice healthy shiat.
I got my raisin bran, almond milk, and my japanese anus-squirting toilet.
Everything else is a clusterfark.

But Subby, we're already in this one; it's too late to prepare for it. Better just cut our losses now and focus on the future.

Panic! The next pandemic is right around the corner!

Or not. Somehow I lived 50 years before one came along.

Yes many countries need better preparedness. Hell even dumbass states like Texas and Florida are farked for the next  one.

"However" this story is more of CNN going ooga booga for ratings than any actual concern.

The world isn't ready.
People are not ready
But social media is prepped and ready to handle the onslaught of lies, misinformation and conspiracies.
The right wingers are also ready, their finger on the grift button to capitalize on the next pandemic.

I pretty much don't trust any news source anymore. They're all biased from their owners on either side of the political spectrum, and the goal isn't journalism; it's profit at any cost.

The world wasn't prepared for the last one and some were very intransigent about what to do for the public good.  This one has been no different, to the point where any help for the public good has been politicized as being all about getting people back to work rather than keeping them safe, all because a mango-faced shiatgibbon decided it was worth lying to the public if the economy kept going so he could ride it all the way to re-election.  Sadly, conservatives all over the world have all followed the same playbook of disinformation because money matters more than the public welfare.

Not sure if it'll help deal with the crazy or exacerbate the crazy, but hope the next one gets the death rate into high gear. We refuse to deal with the insane and violent lunatics so maybe Mother Nature and Papa Nurgel will do it for us.

The United States has made the conscious choice to put the economy over the people, every step of the way. A pandemic is just the latest and most illustrative example of it.

Doesn't matter if it keeps COVID a permanent fixture in our society. Gotta keep shoveling those wage slaves into the fire to churn out those record profits (which totally aren't stolen wages, totally, trust us).

FTFA: The US was the No. 1 example of this, the report found. "With more reported cases and more deaths than any other country, the United States' poor response to the COVID-19 pandemic shocked the world," the report read. "How could a country with so much capacity at the start of the pandemic have gotten its response so wrong?" the report asked.

This is what happens when the leadership at the time spends the first 6 months denying it exists and the next 6 months blaming [insert_current _badguy_here, it changed weekly on Fox for example] before engaging in some semblance of a response.

I love when people ask when the pandemic will be over.

The Black Plague raged around the world from 1350 to 1400 or so.  50 years.

It only ended because it had killed everyone who wasn't somehow immune.

And had killed 2/3 to 3/4 of humanity.

So Covid is here to stay, and it's getting better at killing people.

MERS 2012
SWINE FLUE 2009
SARS 2002
AIDS 1981
EBOLA 1976
You lived through a few.  This is just the one affecting you the most.  In recorded history there have only been 7 more deadly and one of those is AIDS.
Interestingly if you look at the timeline of pandemics they are more frequent but less lethal.  My guess is because of the highe population but advances in medicine.
List does not include all the epidemics we have had.  Any one of these could have turned ended like the bubonic plague

Black death was said to have a positive impact on Europe by weeding out the weak genes (30 to 50% of Europe) resulting in those remaining having a healthier and longer lifespan.
Now, populations have increased a lot but if covid could up its game a bit maybe it can wipe out enough antivaxx and flat earthers to increase the global IQ.
It would make solving the world's problems a lot easier

Slow down there corona, old Joe is almost 80 don't you know!! Hard to watch when it's not a fair fight.

The Black Plague benefited the survivors and pretty much started modern civilization.

So many people died that the survivors found themselves in demand as labor.  They could negotiate better wages and living conditions.

And because whole villages had been wiped out, people became more mobile, taking their skills on the road.  A lot settled in new clusters that became cities full of independent citizens, no longer peasants owned by a warlord.

(These ideas per the historian Barbra Tuchman.)

But as you note, a pestilence on stupid people would lead to an increase in IQ.

I think it's as much to do with our current state of health as the response.

Americans are fat, dumb, lazy (and rapidly deteriorating I expect) - we pretty much suck at everything important now - health, education, sustainability, family.

That said, everyone talks a good mask game, nobody does it. Customers in my local grocery all wear masks. The next store down the road - nobody wears a mask.

The same can be said for the quality of schools in my area. Good school here, shiatty across the street.

Same government, different citizens.

Oh we were prepared for the Covid Pandemic.   What we weren't prepared for is the collective stupidity of humanity to act upon those plans.

2021-12-09 10:08:32 AM
The pandemic we were prepared for, mostly.

What we weren't prepared for was 1/2 the people choosing to side with the plague.

Our response wasn't slow or incompetent, it was sabotaged and inhibited.

2021-12-09 11:03:36 AM
We were as prepared as we could be, then an obviously incompetent asshole got elected president in 2016, which negated all of it.

Like I've been saying for years, stupid will fark us just as much as "competent evil."

It's almost like elections actually matter.
