(NPR)   It was 1 year ago that Biden pledged to forgive $10,000 in student loan debt. Let's check in on how that's coming along. Er, hold on, I'm receiving a priority call on the Progressive Hotline. *takes call* On second thought, let's not check in on that   (npr.org) divider line

While it's not loan forgiveness, Biden extended the pandemic pause on federal student loan payments; that pause is now slated to lift in February. His other actions essentially keep promises the U.S. government had already made to borrowers - rather than make new ones.

We are returning to 'normal'. Is it 2015 again? How exciting.

Bastard promised $50,000 in student debt per borrower and a $15 minimum wage. Then he downgraded it to $10k, and now he doesn't even talk about it at all.

F*ck Biden. Lying piece of sh*t who has all the power in the world to keep people from being wage slaves but chooses not to.

I read the article (shocking)

It seems there's absolutely nothing that the Democrats cannot means-test into oblivion.

"You get $10k of your debt forgiven if you ran a start-up business in an urban center and have completed 3 years of college and live within 200 feet of power lines"

I have a student loan that I took out for our daughter.

The loan holder has contacted me several times to let me know that if I can't afford it that I can apply for loan forgiveness and other income-based options.

I'd say he must be doing something right if the goddam bank is letting me know that I have options.

The reality is the naysayers haven't been able to offer anything other than speculation as to why Biden isn't doing this.

And you need to shut the f*ck up until you know what's going on.

There is literally no downside to canceling student debt. Literally none. It helps people and it helps the economy. The money is already spent. People could buy houses and start businesses and improve their credit.

It makes nothing about education worse. It makes nothing about society worse. The positive effects of doing so would be absolutely massive.

It was in BBB until congress took it out saying they didn't need to pass it.

Meh.  Forget the loan forgiveness.  Reform the cost of school in the first place.  If you are a state school, you probably don't need a second Walmart-sized fitness center.  And while we're at it, let's not build a new stadium for your perennially failing football team.

In a lot of ways, they're not wrong. Even jobs that have no reason to need a college degree will require a college degree.

What I'd like to see is much more encouragement of trade schools and a change in the societal attitude that people who do that work instead of college are somehow lesser.

Instead of acting unilaterally, though, this year Biden asked the Education and Justice departments to explore his legal options. The results are still TBD, more than six months later.

LOL

Biden has consistently been in-between "underperforming" and "disappointing".

Some of these things aren't his fault! He can't change the roster in the senate. But some things like this one he has total authority over and just... Hasn't.

I mean he's fine, I'd rather have Joe than have, say, watched Trump beat Beto or whatever, but christ, every progressive that had Joe at the bottom of their list has been justified.

Biden sucks. Democrats suck. Democrats aren't the "good guys." They are "good cop," that's it. Y'all are being conned. This system is rigged just to funnel money from poor to rich, and Democrats have their part to play in that. They just bang the table and make more of a show before twisting the knife.

I wouldnt be shocked if the Biden Administration wanted to wait until after their budget was secured and passed before moving on this that way the more conservative democrats can't threaten to tank the current negotiations. It also puts that on a timeline to happen right around midterms.

So far the moves Biden has made to cancel student debt have been instances where Congress has passed laws allowing the Treasury to use discretion to pursue or cancel student loans in certain situations. It's why Biden has cancelled loans for folks who were scammed by for-profit scam-schools like Trump University and in cases where the borrower has become disabled and no longer able to work. This is because using the Treasury to cancel debts on a larger basis will almost immediately work it's way up to the SCOTUS which, thanks to our shiatposting friends in 2016, is now stacked 6-3 against us and they will most certainly strike down any attempts at a more blanket loan forgiveness. Where Biden has a clear avenue to cancel student debt, he's done so aggressively. The problem is that in most cases, this does not include the white progressives who don't want to pay back the loans they've taken out and are now threatening to turn the country back over to the fascists because of it.

Honestly, I think the way around this is to refinance every student loan to be at 0% interest (or 0.5-1% for administrative costs). The vast majority of Americans are not behind cancelling the student loan debts with no plan to bring college costs down but I think most people would agree that the federal government doesn't have to make a buck off of the students. My loan was at 6.75% interest which was a nightmare to pay off. I could have had the whole thing done in 5 years at 0% interest though instead of the 20 that it took.

You're asking us to believe that progressives made cuts to the bill specifically to blame Biden for it, and not because they were told it had to keep being cut to get Manchin and Sinema on board (you were nice enough to already cover for your conservative heroes). You're a fraud and a clown.

So if we cancel student debt, how long does that last? Do we do it every 10 years? 5 years? Annually? It doesn't address the problem; it just bails out current loan holders. The problem of student loan debt will just come back.

We need both. Forgiving debt solves the problem of debt already existing; fixing the price of college prevents new debt from existing in the future.
