Meadows refused and ran away after finding out the committee was going to confirm anything he said with other sources. Pretty clear Meadows was planning on lying to the committee.

Wow, contempt charges. That'll show him when he gets formally charged in January, has his first court appearance in May, and his hearing will be after the 2022 elections and the new Congress will let him off completely.

But I'm sure the Committee reminding Meadows that he used to be a Representative is really going to bother Meadows. It's probably the harshest accountability he will face here.

eurotrader: confirm anything he said with other sources

That's the entire point.

The committee has spent the last year gathering evidence, corroborating it with multiple sources, cataloging it, and the final icing on the cake is to bring in people with first-hand knowledge, and ask them pointed questions that will either be answered truthfully and be an admission of guilt, or answered with a lie that will then be proven to be a lie via the evidence.

Every invocation of their fifth amendment rights will give criminal prosecutors specific areas to investigate, too.

Exactly. It's not like we don't have mountains of evidence already. This is all for mailing these assholes to the wall, either through their own admission of guilt or through charges of lying under oath

All true, but the fact this commission can be shut down in 2022 is a travesty of justice! We need a 9/11 commission with big, sharp teeth NOW, or we are going to see American fascism continue to rise, and with zero accountability for this treason we will all hang together expressing shock and surprise at the end of a fascist MAGA rope.

What good will thoughts and prayers be then?

Don't. I'm with you on the usual "there will be no consequences for certain people", but if the DoJ gets the charges and acts on them, the 2022 elections won't impact this, so don't be disingenuous.

The best we can hope for is the lackeys get punished, and then there are fewer lackeys willing to enable the worst of us. This is a step in that direction.

It seems like a lot of people are assuming that the committee is bringing in people for questioning to, like, ask them random questions to gather information. No, they've already gathered the information. They're bringing these people in because they already know stuff about them, and they'll absolutely know if they're lying. That's why no one wants to submit to questioning.

You're probably right. They won't be able to squash the charges after the 2022 elections if they've been referred to the DoJ.

They'll just have to keep delaying until after 2024 when Trump's AG can drop the charges.

Sure...but it also means that the consequences come far too late to matter. I know justice moves deliberately, but sometimes that needs happen more quickly. The GOP has been playing the long game on this. First they tanked the bipartisan, bicameral commission, because that would have moved much more quickly and been much more high profile.

The next step was to grouse loudly about the House select committee. That was meant to give cover for Bannon, Meadows, etc to ignor subpoenas as a "partisan" issue. They found an unwitting accomplice in the Merrick Garland who views the existential threat of an insurrect as something that needs to be treated with the same BAU that results in long lead times. The nail in the coffin was what TFG did in getting so many judges on the bench. They are obviously reticent (at best) or in on it (at worst). They are then able to set trial dates so far in the future consequences will not matter until late 2022 (wrongly) reinforcing the "partisan" since it coincides with the midterms.

tl;dr: they will get away with it

Seriously? You're happy with the current pace?

The absolute frickin' least the House could do is haul this stuff into public hearings and hammer a message out to the media.

Same thing. Day after day after day after day.

That worked for the GOP to vilify Hillary on 'Benghazi', and they had absolutely nothing. It was all performative BS.

And that's the least they could do.

If only Congress had inherent contempt powers granted to them by the Constitution. Then they could task the Sergeant at Arms office with arresting him right now instead of asking another branch to handle it when they feel like getting around to it.

Oh, wait, they do.
