(Guardian)   The first day of the World Snooker Championship sees England score a maximum 147. Sorry...it appears that England have scored 147 against Australia in thr first day of the Ashes series. That is rather less good   (theguardian.com) divider line

I'm always surprised cricket isn't bigger among basketball fans.  Like, they score even more points! 500 on a good day!

/ That was not a good day for England
// I'm getting 90's vibes. Like, "can't even hate them any more, just feel sorry for them" levels of futility.

England should demand that the balls be inspected.

The problem with England is that they're always walking (back to the lockers after failing to do anything)

The Aus team is fired up at the moment, and probably one of the top 3 test teams in the world right now. I wouldn't put a 400+ innings beyond them. They're better at handling pace than England.

It's bizarre -- I can turn on a cricket match and watch and follow along with what's happening just fine.

However, if I hear a report on a cricket match on, say, BBC Radio, or even read an article on it somewhere, it might as well be written in Elvish.  No idea what the hell they're talking about.

This must be what American football feels like to British people.

/though I don't ask me why refs call holding in some cases but not others, no farking idea

Burns' dismissal set the tone. Perhaps not full Harmison but you could see the vibe rippling through the team. For Root to be out for 0 confirmed the sucky performance.

What to do? Bowling first AUS could likely have been 220-1 at the close so the toss wasn't the issue. ENG don't have the players. An undercooked Stokes, Root and a couple old timer bowler legends that didn't make the 11 today. What a mess.

I've tried to understand "weird" meaning non American sports. Soccer, curling, all that. Curling during the last winter Olympics was pretty much all I watched, once I understood the rules and the strategy. But I've tried so hard to understand cricket, and to get into it, and I'm just like 🤷♂

Aussie football is kinda the same for me. I like it, but I don't understand anything about it, so I can't really get into it

You see, the batsman left himself vulnerable to a bob, which allowed the Whiftyshire an opportunity to slog the bangers and left the Jerryport stranded on the bilge martha.

It's useless to try. This game is just the UK reminding everyone just how inbred their upper class really is.

I'm still torn about the exact  inning. There are only two innings in Cricket, but you're not finished until you can't have two batsman out, so you get 10 outs per inning. So maybe it's 11-0 at the bottom of the 4th?

The real problem is test cricket is that the match is called a draw if it's not complete after the stated time (five days for almost all test series now.) But England batted first and put up a miserable score, which means that Australia can run up about 250-300 runs, declare their innings over, and have plenty of time to beat England in the last two days - since they're batting last, they just need to get one more run than England. For England to win, they need to have more runs after they get all 10 outs in both innings, and Australia hasn't even started batting yet.

Basically, England's only hope is that Australia's batting collapses even harder and faster.

I have, in the past, said of gridiron "it's all cricket to me".

As for Aussie rules, if you feel the need to understand it to enjoy it, you're never going to enjoy it.  We call it "rules" in the same way we call redheads "Bluey" and short people "Lofty".
