It's all part of a long game by Putin so Republicans can run on either "Biden got us into a land war in Asia" or "Biden won't stand up to the Russians" with the goal of another four years (or more) of jamming his fist up the ass of an orange puppet in the White House.

Subby, cutting the Russians off from the SWIFT banking system is an economic nuclear strike that would decimate their country and likely bring about regime change.

Couple that with the seizure of oligarch assets and properties in NATO countries (there's a crapload in the US and UK alone) and you basically destroy the oligarchs

You both forgot that for the past 5 years or so, Republicans have been talking about how great he is. They're probably gonna go with "Biden attacked a great man for no reason and is now stealing Putin's money."

It started when he signed the U.S.-Russia Presidential Joint Statement on Strategic Stability this year, Biden more or less saying that he "does not want the United States to be reduced to radioactive ash."

Putin. If the oligarchs aren't happy, there will be regime change or a very strong crackdown from Putin. Basically it puts the ball in their court to deal with.

Nothing is stopping subby and the hawks from heading to Ukraine and suiting up with their military. It's quite easy. Meantime, in the real world, there is nothing in Ukraine worth a war involving the United States, especially with the EU sitting on its hands.

Point is, we've been sucking up to Russia almost nonstop since the 1990s. Maybe if we just keep being nice to them, they'll change everything about themselves and suddenly come into the Western fold.

And it's always the same - new president comes in, they think they can change Russia by negotiating with them, ultimately they realise Russia is full of shiat, relations sour, and a new president runs on a platform that (partially) focuses on "fixing" relationship with Russia, starting the whole cycle again.

Then that would be a sharp change in direction back to something close to reality.
Large numbers of GQP voters believe the EU is our enemy and Russia is a close philosophical and (white) ally.  They wonder why Trump cant sell the Ukraine like he did the Kurds homeland to Turkey or Afghanistan to the Taliban.  People are property, right?  Should they not think like that, like it's wrong or something?  Does that make people angry maybe?

The US administration has no intention of going to war with Russia over the Ukraine - that much is clear. I don't think that's unreasonable. I didn't expect Obama to go to war over Crimea, nor GWB to go to war over the Georgia invasion.

It's less clear what the US admin thinks Russia aims to achieve by invading the Ukraine. Unlike Crimea, which was actually part of the Russian Soviet Republic until Stalin gave it to the Ukraine in 1954, eastern Ukraine isn't overwhelmingly Russian (only somewhat so), nor was historically a part of Russia. I believe Putin would have annexed it in 2014 if he really had any real claims to the territory.

It's pretty clear Putin would very much like a friendlier regime in Kiev, but short of actually occupying the whole country (which would be stupid) threatening to invade actually works against him. The current government might collapse after an invasion, but the ethnic Ukrainians won't support a Russian stooge.

The binary, yes-no, black-white thinkers that constitute conservatives have only one use for gray doubt -- as a weapon to be used at every turn.  That gray is propaganda where the real intention is hidden.

It's perfect for the new cold war which is quite different from the earlier cold war, but the same gray, doubtable goal only worse.

Russian people were told for a long time that average Joe Americans actually loved them.  It's just the leaders who were bad.  Putin changed that and began the New Cold War.  Russians now really hate the west -- with even a religious fanatic exclusion.  To get to that level of us vs them, the pope would have to excommunicate all Russian Orthodox as a major goal and talk about the goal everyday.  They would become people who could not be buried in consecrated ground -- subhuman animals.

The doubt purposed propaganda is the same as the Republican joke -- humorous only in its tastelessness -- not quite fully proof of racism or bigotry.  Not quite a death threat.  Not quite full on hostile, just below the line.  It's the "code word" with all intent denied.  It's the 300lb small child temper tantrum.

Deniable, gray propaganda with all intent hidden is what we'll be fed for a long time.  What to watch is how the media falls for it.  We watched CNN turn vicious over Biden in August since Fox Lite wasn't cutting it.  We may hear about how Guiliani's and Manafort's lucrative playground is about to be invaded and why Russia will need them to negotiate.

Putin would have waited until the 2024 election to try a stunt like this, if that was the goal. Keeping all those troops combat ready is expensive as hell (at a time when his economy is struggling) and the US voting public has the attention span of a fruit fly.

I mean David is pretty smart and Swift is pretty spry, but Russia might be a little much for them.

Although seriously, throw in outright seizing of Putin and Oligarch assets and cut Russia off of ARIN and that would pretty much do them in with a few pen strokes.
