It makes perfect sense. They like money, and Russia and Putin are willing to give petty cash folks to turn the political cogs. It's cheaper than investing in that military to keep it current and up to date, and a few troll farms and the SVR and FSB likes having foreign politicians and media in their pockets. They've stolen all the cash that they can from their own citizens, so why NOT use it to try to cover looting another? It's a lot cheaper than keeping up with the West militarily, and they don't have to give money to expensive contractors and can just keep using the stockpiled stuff from the USSR. Trump's election was literally one of the most successful foreign op on US soil in the history of our country, and damned if the Russians are going to do everything in their power to keep the US from officially recognizing it, or studying it.

On a related note...  While David Muir was talking about this last night, he kept using words like "Russian backed rebels, are exchanging gunfire with the Ukraine Military"

I hope everyone actually understands what that really means.

Russia is paying Ukrainians to kill actual military Ukrainians.  How convenient for them.  They are able to perform actual military action in the Ukraine, but since it's not THEIR soldiers, their hands are clean.

2021-12-08 7:26:16 AM
I don't see any reason why we should be pushing NATO membership for Ukraine. I think this is seen by Russia as a provocation.  It would be like having Mexico join the Warsaw Pact, if it still existed. However, I see nothing wrong with folding Ukraine into the EU.  Much of Ukraine is already focused economically towards the West.  The EU should also offer some kind of association, not full membership, to Russia since part of Russia is in Europe.

If Russia and China are friends now, thats our fault. I'd rather have all the Russia nukes pointing at China. But if Russia wants to be friends with China, then why should we let them have the 1000 year navy base? Thats bad. So, suck it Russia.

But, thats all a smoke screen. I'm thinking this is more about America selling energy to Europe.

It makes perfect sense. The only reason Republicans hated the Soviets was because of their official atheism. Now that Putin's embraced the Church, and the Church supports him, Republican and Russian beliefs are very similar.

If Russia wanted to be a civilized and rational actor that would actually obey the treaty, then yes. Since that will never be the case while Putin is around, it will not happen. Also, the NATO membership isn't being forced on anyone. Ukraine wants to join NATO for protection from Russia after Russia has tried to control them and has invaded and annexed part of their country.

It is Russia that is the problem here, not NATO. Heck, if Russia wasn't still trying to take over Europe by force, it would likely be in the EU by now and NATO would likely be dissolved or would include them. Everyone would be better off other than a few dozen people in Russia that are all pushing 60 at this point and not likely to be alive in another 20 years.

Erm...no. It's pretty clear you've never been to Russia. Huge Asian population there, especially in the big cities. And we're not talking Han Chinese, it's more the darker skinned central Asians from the soviet days when people were moved en masse around the country and equality was the name of the game.

What you don't have is ghettos of extreme poverty filled with only minorities like you have in USA. Ethnic groups all just sort of intermingle in Russia.

Bravo Mr. Putin, Bravo!

In 1918 President Wilson sent troops to Siberia to aid in the Russian Civil war (more). A 100 years of threats, open and proxy wars did nothing to change this. Then with a couple of opportunistic fools, you made many Americans think it was patriotic to support mother Russia. Well done.

It's exactly what Putin wants, yes, but the isolationist "who needs allies" streak in American politics is as old as the country. It took Pearl Harbor to get us into WWII. You don't necessarily have to pay conservatives to say "fark Ukraine."

If all trade is cut off from Russia, their economy would crash. No food imports either nor any consumer products. The gas pipeline being cancelled or even held up by this would be a massive loss of money for Putin and his friends. They can't rely on the old Soviet oil equipment to make enough money to keep things going and they don't have the technology to replace it.

Here's the thing. Putin needs oil and gas sales money to pay his friends to not try killing him and to pay for his military's R&D and maintenance costs. The populace unemployed and starving isn't going to make a change, but if the other kleptocrats aren't making money and all their over seas assets are frozen, they are going to replace Putin or pressure him to not rock the boat. He's riding a bear right now and needs to keep it fed.

To show what little us Americans know about the Russian people and their ethnic makeup, I have a story about that.

I used to work for this place.  One of the programmers there was an Asian guy.  He looked every bit like every Chinese person I had ever met.  But when he spoke, he spoke with a thick Russian accent.  And he hung out with all the other Russian folks that worked in the building.

What I learned from that was that there is a HUGE population of very Asian folks that have been living in Russian society and culture for so long that they are completely integrated into that culture.

This shouldn't have been surprising to me.  But because of how little information about that sort of thing is commonly known to us Americans, it was a little surprising to me.

There are a lot of naysayers who believe that it's unlikely Russian internet propaganda is as pervasive as its critics claim, but here are a few facts.

1.  We already know that Russian trolls targeted small-town newspapers and local news comments sections.  They found these to be more effective because that's where their targets are and people are more trusting of local news.  No webpage is "too small" for Russian trolls.
2.  This is because the people they can employ is vast.  Russia is bereft of good jobs.  Becoming a mercenary in Syria is considered a good job.  Russian trolls can part-time it at home for a better wage than they can get elsewhere and at the same time work on their English skills so they can leave Russia and get an actual good job.

In conclusion, there are Russian trolls everywhere because they're cheap to employ and they get results.  Why wouldn't there be?  I consider it the most effective psychological warfare operation ever seen.

All trade? Biden already unilaterally cancelled sanctions which had passed both houses of Congress this year at the behest of Germany who are so desperate for their precious natural gas pipeline that they will allow election tampering, invasions, and whatever else.

Even if you do get the EU on side, Russia's top trade partner by a mile is China, and you know they aren't going to do anything to help Ukraine. A proxy war between nato and Russia actually benefits the Chinese as it takes American attention away from the south pacific.

You realize that those "weak economic sanctions" includes removal of Russia from the SWIFT banking system, which would cripple him and the oligarchs. It's the closest thing to an economic nuclear strike we can use.
