It's not just a ban: it outright criminalizes conversion therapy:

Proposed Criminal Code offences related to conversion therapy

Conversion therapy is a perfect example that all christians are lying, amoral, evil, dumbf*cking sacks of shiat. Telling them what they are makes family gathering far more enjoyable, quiet and stress free, because all the assholes are gone.

That's pretty much just a ceremonial formality. The Governor General (the Queen's rep in Canada) has never withheld royal assent, and I really don't see this bill being the one to change that.

Technically, yes.

Practically... no.

It would make Canada instantly threaten to pull a Barbados.

And the Crown has maintained a stance of not even interfering with Brit politics.

It's more like calling your mom every now and again to let her know how you are doing... and she doesn't really give a sh*t because you are a big boy now.

So, just because I hate him and it's tangentally on topic, the Minnesotan former state senate leader, Paul Gazelka, sent his own child to therapy because they came out as a lesbian.

Bonus:  Guess who the therapist was?  Remember Michelle Bachmann, another crazy Minnesotan Republican?  Yup, her husband is a therapist.

Oh, and why is Gazelka a former state senate leader?  Could it be his opposition to conversion therapy bans?  Or perhaps his behavior during the pandemic which is entirely a pro-death platform?  Maybe it was blocking police reform after George Floyd?

Nah, that's not it.  He's a Republican after all, they don't care.

He resigned because he's running for governor next year.

Did I mention how much I hate him?

You may want to reconsider including the Americas in that list, what with the religious conservatives having a near strangle hold on power in many areas on both continents.

It strikes me that a very large number of Tories voted with the majority to out-law this eggregious pseudo-moral and pseudo-scientific "therapy" to torturue and brain-wash sexual minorities of all kinds (except heterosexuals, but don't quote me on that as I don't really know if they are doing it to brain-wash themselves).

Good for them. The real Conservatives move on, albeit reluctantly an cautiously, leaving only reactionaries and radical rightists behind.

That Canadian Conservatives have so far embraced tolerance and human compassion and decency over violence to the human body and mind, soul and spirit, is a good and comforting sign that the sulpherous* demon-scented candle is not yet to be extinguished in the wind.

The Queen does not have dictatorial powers, but Her Majesty's Loyal Government might. It is the duty of every loyal subject to keep the Bastids under surveillance, control and check. Unlike Trump's solepcistic mind, the Head of State is not an Absolute Monarch. They governe by custom and with the consent of the British People, or else snicker snack, off with their heads.

In theory, the Queen can give the military, the churchmen and the poltical classes their walking papers by saying No! quite firmly. Governments know their legitimacy falls if they are checked (on a money bill, aka a budget or a piece of "real" legislation and that the Queen may form a new Government by asking for one and crossing-her fingers with the aid of a footman or equery. The leader of the Opposition then gets to have an extra-cirricular try at forming a Government without a new Election. fark TRUMP. Even without an Election.

Did you see when the Queen compared Donald Trump to his own helicopter? It is worth a Google. To be fair she mentioned Mr. Obama so as to be strictly none partisan but that plays to the "both sides are (equally) bad crowd and they are not equal by any means. Some of them are the Bad Sort of Tories and Socialists, and some are the Good Uns.

Governor-General, acting on behalf of the Queen.

Very, very, very rarely do they not sign what is put before them.

The last time the Monarch vetoed an act of Parliament in the UK was 1708, which the government had changed their minds about and asked Anne to withhold consent.

With the establishment of responsible government in the Canadian colonies through the 1840s the monarchy acknowledged its role and that withholding assent was not an option (this was laid out with the Rebellion Losses Bill in 1848 where Lord Elgin said he personally opposed it but since the majority of parliament approved he must give his assent).

As far as I am aware the Monarchy never withheld consent to legislation passed by a legislature of a Dominion / independent former colony.

The place where the monarchy has used powers has been the decision on whether to dissolve parliament or who to grant the authority to form a government (both Canada and Australia ran into issues there) but withholding Royal Assent (with a possible exception if the PM requested it with the backing of a majority of Parliament) would destroy the monarchy.

Well, the Governor General could in theorybrefuse on behalf of the Queen.  That's ceremonial only.  If refused, the PM would replace the GG.  If the crown objected, bye-bye monarcy.  We really only keep it because it's traditional and there are bigger fish to fry.  It has no power.

The Tories have been the ones that blocked this last time. It is exceedingly popular and the Tories realized it would be political suicide to oppose it in the election. And now they get it through government quickly before the nutters get riled up.

Yeah, they're totally brainwashing themselves.  Look up "purity culture" if you're not already familiar with it.  Religions that practise it don't need separate brainwashing camps for heterosexuals because the entire religion is a brainwashing camp for heterosexuals.

That Canadian Conservatives have so far embraced tolerance and human compassion and decency over violence to the human body and mind, soul and spirit, is a good and comforting sign that the sulpherous* demon-scented candle is not yet to be extinguished in the wind.

A majority of Canadian Conservatives would've voted for both Clinton and Biden over Trump.  A big part of the reason for that is differences in patriarchal attitudes.  Even our most patriarchal region (Alberta, at 26% support for the statement "The father must be master in his own house") is less patriarchal than the least patriarchal region of the US (New England, at 42% for the same statement).  That difference has been there for most of the four decades that Environics has been asking the question.  There's still plenty of gender role stuff up here in Canada, but we're less fixated on it.
