Maybe China and Russia can do each other buddy favors. China can invade Ukraine, and Russia can invade Taiwan. Meanwhile, the US can try to take Madagascar.

Fasces Breaker: So living next to Russia is like living in the US? Who knew.

There are subtle differences. For example, you get gaslighting in both but you can tell the difference. In the US it's the dumbest shiat you can possibly imagine and in Russia it's every single word that the government says.

In Canada it comes with a side of poutine.

Ukraine is still a country?  Sweet feathery jesus.  They need to suplicate to russia and have a peaceful transfer of power.  Ain't nobody gonna WW3 over their small dick energy.  Biden aint getting his chain or straight razor out for Ukraine.

Best case scenario.  The women and children of Ukraine are evacuated from the not quite dead country and then men blow up the resources and infrastructure of Ukraine while fighting russia to the last man.  Hopefully killing as many russians as they can before the fall.

Ukraine has to go from Russia's standpoint because it's the only SSR that actually embraced democracy.  All the rest are Putin aligned despots and dictators, which Putin knows he can control (or at least safely eliminate).  With a Democracy, that shiat can spread if your not careful, so he's gotta get rid of it and install his own puppet (see Belorussia for deets).
The funny part is the why now part of it.  He's got a race on his hands.  More sooner than later, once EU doesn't need his NatGas, he's truly boned since they can fight back without crippling their economies.  While Germany (for example) needs all that sweet sweet Russian NG, Germany won't want to get into a shooting match with their primary vendor.  Advantage Russia.  But slowly the Germans are trying to go green and kick that habit.  But the US doesn't have that problem.  But Putin's Trump investment REALLY pays off in 2025 when the US civil war starts after a gerrymandered GOP House doesn't sit any POTUS other than the GOP choice (45 or Deathsantis or whomever) no matter the votes.  China is most likely waiting for it's invastion of Taiwan until then too.
So why not just wait for 2025?

Putin's health must be declining fast enough that it means he wants his "CCCP Part Deux" agenda sooner than 2025.

Ukraine shouldn't taunt happy funball, they are going to get a hot war sooner than later and Putin just needs an excuse to do it it appears.

Dictators have the upper hand across the world today, and it's only going to get darker until at least 2030 (especially if Jan 6 masterminds don't do hard jail).

/If we come out of the darkness, the Water Wars caused by Climate change is up next.

I guess if you lower the bar to Hong Kong and Turkey levels that could be true.

Many years ago, Richard Nixon and Leonid Brezhnev were at a state dinner. Brezhnev said: "Comrade Nixon, I had a dream last night in which I saw a flag over the White House with letters on it." Nixon asked: "And what were those letters?" Brezhnev responded with a chuckle: "USSR!". "What a coincidence." Nixon said, "I had a dream as well where I saw a flag with letters over the Kremlin." "And what might those letter have been, Mr. President" asked Brezhnev. Nixon replied: "I don't know. I can't read Chinese."

Petroleum Oligarch: Ukraine embraced democracy and the Baltic states are run by Putin aligned despots and dictators?

I don't consider the Baltics part of the USSR since officially the US in that era didn't either.

Compared to an inch, a foot looks pretty big.  Yes, it's not a mile, but compared to Belorussia or Turkmenistan, et al, yeah they are a democracy.

Heliodorus: Ketchuponsteak: skinink: Maybe China and Russia can do each other buddy favors. China can invade Ukraine, and Russia can invade Taiwan. Meanwhile, the US can try to take Madagascar.

If China sells an invasion fleet around to the Black Sea, we know what's up.

Turkey controls all access to the Black sea via the Bosporous straight. But technically they signed a treaty which first banned non-Turkish larger warships from passing through in order to stay neutral in WWII. But it forced Turkey to allow smaller military vessels free passage if the ships are from states that have a shore on the black sea and the ships are not a threat to Turkey's own defense. Due to this in WWII, Nazi Germany was barred from sending ships through the straight to attack the USSR. Which gave the Soviet Black sea fleet the breathing room to fully assist the resistance to the land invasion of present day Ukraine by the German army. Conversely, during the Cold war, the USSR agitated Turkey enough that it allowed larger US warships to enter and patrol the Black sea.

Outside of Russia or the rest of NATO really pissing off Turkey, the Chinese ships won't be allowed to pass through the Bosporous straight. Nor would the Chinese have any inkling to intervene in the conflict unless Ukraine wants to make some extremely desperate deals with China. China and Russia are NOT allies, they have a friendly relationship because they both can't choose who their neighbors are and it is sometimes mutually beneficial to work together. China isn't going to support Russia or support Ukraine/NATO in a war unless it is in China's best interest to do so.

Technically Turkey can withdraw from the treaty anytime it wants and they will have absolute control of what ships can cross into and out of the Black sea. But right now it suits them to keep the status quo. Also, a 'threat to the defense of Turkey' is so broad that they can technically close the straight to any military ships as long as Turkey is fine with the polit ...

At this point in life, I only end up at parties with overly educated people. Either the main discussion is how early 1930s east and south asian politics continue to shape the modern world, or that persons spouse is recounting how they got really high on research compounds and then drank bottled breast milk to get rid of their dry mouth.
