Straight up KFC just lied about fried chicken being stereotypical Christmas fare in America and the Japanese adopted it as part of the tradition.

Much like they say that host/hostess clubs are an import from the West and Americans/Europeans just scratch their heads at them.

Weird Celtic CSB: At my uncles wedding reception a guy showed up in a bear costume and was followed by a guy dressed up as some kind of undead fisherman. They did a little dance with the bride and the groom and then left. I guess it's some kind of Celtic custom where a bear or some beast shows up at your wedding and dances with and underworld hunter. Not sure what this all means, but it made me question my sanity.

In my experience, mummering is primarily about alcohol and crossdressing.

As a contrast to the Yule Cat, another Icelandic tradition is to give books as Christmas Eve gifts. The entire family then sits around the fireplace reading their books and eating chocolate. Really smart families also give new pajamas so they are wearing new clothing to appease the Yule Cat.

Sitting in front of a fire with new pj's, chocolate, and a book sounds a lot like my ideal Christmas Eve. Add in a bottle of nice wine and I am in heaven.

Fun Fact: Iceland buys more books per capita than any other country.

They're not weird so much as extra, but the Portuguese love to make these insane nativity scenes that are, Iike, literally the entire city of Bethlehem, called a presepio. My great aunt used to make one every year and it took up literally the whole living room. Literally. It was the "nice" living room, so it's not like they ever used it anyway--Jesus himself could show up and he'd have to sit in the sitting room like everyone else.

Schmutzli (Krampus)  doesn't just beat naughty children, he kidnaps them.  And, I suspect, forces them to dress as elves, and work in Santa's toy factory.

There is a local realtor named Trampus Goodman. Someone, a friend, on occasion sends an anonymous messages to his business email addy accusing him of using the pseudonym Trampus Goodman, instead of his real name is Krampus Evilmonster.
