I recently watched Quiz Show (1994) and rugelach is used as a shibboleth.

A really good rugelach is amazing.  It's what baklava would be if it had been invented by central European Jews.

It looks like a cinnamon roll but with (not cinnamon filling) inserted in place of the cinnamon paste

Me too. We didn't know any Jewish families when we were growing up so we never got to sample the cuisine.

Rugelach is served more-or-less year-round (Passover being the obvious exception). My wife's family makes it for Rosh Hashanah.
If you can, go to a Jewish bakery and get the crescent roll style.
I'd share a recipe, but (1) I think it's a family secret and (2) I don't know how much is actually written down. I do need to get on my wife to write all this down.

True. I haven't had Walmart baklava, but I'm willing to go out on a limb and say that good rugelach are better than Walmart baklava.

Probably. But I'll go so far as to say any baklava is like sex. Even if it's bad, it's still pretty good.
