Behind every great man is a great woman.   And behind every great woman is Captain Beefheart.   That came together to change Tom's life.   Frank's Wild Years is the best record I every owned.

"Behind every great woman is Captain Beefheart" is not a sentence I think I've ever seen or will ever see again.

The growl is kind of an affectation, but I'm cool with that.  Here's an example of how he sounded like early on.  He really sounds almost dead on like Springsteen here (though this pre-dates Springsteen's first recordings, and I'd point out that Springsteen is up-front about what an influence Waits is on him):

All Waits songs and done rather well. When listening, my head space is in a darkly lit and smoky club, sitting at a half moon table.

I was vaguely familiar with Tom Waits before, but the movie soundtrack to Jarhead featuring "Soldier's Things" sparked my interest and has led to a nice collection of his music up to now.

Pretty sure it was my 16th birthday when my brother handed me the Blue Valentine album with the caution that I probably wouldn't like it right away but I should give it a chance. He was right, it took a couple of listens before it sunk in but it opened up a whole new perspective on music for me. Thanks big brother!

an old TFette pal lived in LA and worked at either a fancy law firm or fancy accounting place.  one day she sees this disheveled guy in the lobby, splayed out on the waiting area chairs.  after about 15-20 minutes of this, she says to a coworker, "uhh.....should we......call security?  he's not bothering anybody, buuuuuuuuuuut........I meannnn........"

another coworker says to her, "uh, don't you know that is?  That's Tom Waits.  He meets with [attorney/accountant] every quarter to go over his account!"

"Oh........."

I think that old Hunter S Thompson quotes applies to Tom:

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die

I was introduced to  Mr. Waits music initially by watching Beavis and Butthead back in '94 with his video of "I Don't Wanna Grow Up". At the time, I thought his style of music was odd and out of place amongst the other music the cartoon showcased, but I filed him away as a "check on him later" kind of thing. Didn't give him much thought until around '99 when he had a song on the "Fight Club"  soundtrack. I really liked the rawness of the track and I remember snagging a couple of his songs on Napster (the other was "What's he building in there?" VH1 storytellers, I believe"). I still wasn't completely sold until he popped up on the intro of season two of "The Wire" and that's when I bought Rain Dogs and my fandom really took off. I hope to see him live one day.

Wholeheartedly agree.

Tom  is who showed me that music is just art like any other art .
just cause we call it "music" does not mean it has to move you to dance, or have any specific rhythm, etc, etc tec.

Like the golden ratio for the canvas, yo can use it and it is a useful tool, but it is not really a rule that you can't break. Some of the greatest art we value, explicit breaks the golden ratio.
It dos not have ot be beautiful it can be ugly, it odes not need to make you feel good, it can make you feel bad, and so n and so on and so on.

SO thanks for this lesson, also fook you for that lesson, life could been blissfully ignorant. ;)

That song is "Going Out West". I was surprised to see it on a list at a karaoke bar, so of course I had to sing it. I never realized how funny the lyrics for that song were until that day.

I'm always happy to see Waits pop up in a movie. His scenes with Denzel Washington in The Book of Eli are really funny. He's also in The Old Man and the Gun (a terrific film, by the way, maybe the most charming movie I've ever seen), and I would love a spinoff film that's nothing but him and Danny Glover chatting.

His appearance during the LSD trip in Domino was the best part of the movie.
