"What is not clear, is why these salaries were not included in the governor's budget set prior to the fiscal year and prior to the pandemic," he said in the audit report.

OOH!  OOH!  I KNOW!  I KNOW!  PICK ME!

Governor claims staff was working on COVID response and thus money was properly allocated.

I hope Rob Sand doesn't get boned here, but he damned well might.

Not sure about this one.. this could be that rare republican sloppiness rather than outright graft, and just not following protocol to cover covid staff expenses. Iowa was not the worse red state in the pandemic so they might have mayyyybe had some people working on it.

I give it like a 5 percent chance of being legit... which is high for a gqp

So she swiped the money then used it on something it wasn't meant for and hid it until caught. That's theft.  But that R will protect her and she'll probably just have to revise a form to be ok.

Of course all republicans will always cheat. They learned from their raping master trump and their lessons in their christian madrasas.

I will never rent to or hire a republican because I know they will all lie, steal, and attempt to rape my other tenants and employees. That is an absolute fact backed up by decades of proof.

This isn't the first time.

Last summer she took money earmarked for pandemic relief and gave her buddy, the state epidemiologist (who fudged/hid Covid case & death numbers right along with Kovid Kim) a %45 raise to get her up to over $265k a year. Her deputy got one too,

And meanwhile, she is going to let $140m+ go back to the federal government that was to be used for rent and utility assistance because she is a farkin' hateful drunk.

I farkin' hate her. Everyone should.

When I was young, traveling the world, I asked someone in an area known for strife if he wanted peace. He said "Yes, of course. Everyone wants peace in this country." Then I asked, "What do you feel peace means?" He responded, "When all of them are dead."

I'm beginning to see his logic.

"This has always been our justification for the expense. We are now working with Treasury to provide them documentation, per their request."

Translation: "We're going to stonewall any inquiries hoping people lose interest."

Sidenote about how this story all got broke and who did it, and what Reynolds did about it:

Laura Belin is a notable blogger, Tweeter, etc, based in Des Moines. She did a lot of the legwork for this, and the previous payouts of COVID relief funds as raises to Reynolds' buddies.

Her dad, David Belin was an attorney for the Warren Commission and Rockefeller Commission. I always enjoyed listening to him speak, which became a bit of a rarity over time.

So, anyway, Reynolds has sent her attack dogs after Belin and Sand, the Auditor, trying to subpoena their emails and shiat. So far that has been unsuccessful. This has been going on for about a year, now.

Last I heard, Reynolds had barred Belin from her events (perhaps that has been lifted now, but no questions, I dunno), after Belin shouted a question about this very subject during a presser a while back.

Reynolds is caught, dead to rights. Changing a header in a spreadsheet? After you sent that to the federal government, to get a check? Farking drunk moron.

How many days in jail do you get for this, if trying to kill the Vice President gets you 45 days?

Good luck getting any construction work hired on. Depending on where you are. My MAGA dad, who used to be an absolute expert on finishing carpentry, did tell me once that if you want a roof redone hire a Mexican crew. First thought was to brace for a racist screed but he simply said they get the work done fast.

Couple summers ago I watched a roof getting redone across the street. The guy in charge was clearly a white guy but his crew were all Mexican. Those guys hustled. A teen white boy was there sometimes and I'm guessing the son of the boss. Lazy little shiat. Slacked around and when handed a broom he pushed it along with one hand.

Yeah I'm way off topic. Whatever.

"The next day (the Good Samaritan) took out some money and gave it to the innkeeper. 'Look after (the injured man),' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.' And the innkeeper took the money and used it to give her workers a raise and buy some more booze".

Which federal program?  It's kind of important to be specific because they each have different rules. Article doesn't name the program which is pretty elementary journalism.

The graft happened before, and was the reason for the payroll shortfall that this money was misappropriated for.

It's a red state thing. Once Uncle Sam hands over the money, it's not taxpayer money or a handout or federal funds, it's the state's money.

South Dakota has abused COVID money. The governor brags about the financial condition of the state but never mentions the billions in handouts. The latest thing: they want to used COIVD money to build a pipeline from the Missouri river to the western part of the state.

But it's okay; it's South Dakota's money. People are so used to money arriving from the government it's just taken as normal.

Nuh-uh.

The feds want their $141m of CARES money that Reynolds refused to release for rent and utilities back.

The red states have an ongoing lawsuit that claims Congress overstepped its Constitutional bounds by requiring that the funds not be used to fill ordinary budget shortfalls. I expect Reynolds and/or Noem will simply wait it out until that case is settled.

In a way, it's nice to see that female Republican politicians are just as capable of being filthy crooks as the men.

FEMINISM!

FTFA: concealing the spending by passing it through the state Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Yeah, that seems wrong, illegal, even.

FTFA: "What is not clear, is why these salaries were not included in the governor's budget set prior to the fiscal year and prior to the pandemic"

Nah, I think it's pretty clear why.

In its continuing attempt to allow right wingers to contribute to its editorial page the WAPO had some republicanette yesterday laying it on us how good it is that moderate republican WOMEN are going to save the party.  She included the witch from Des Moines, which is, well, pretty farking stupid.

Also (non sequitur alert) recently (very) I complained to the editorial staff that the WAPO allowed M. Thiessen to write an editorial praising the use of the term "lets go ...andon."  Nor surprisingly I got a response that basically said there were a lot of people complaining about that editorial.

Then she has to stand in front of a judge and explain why she told the feds she needed the money because she left her office staff salaries out of the projected budget. Not Covid relief.

I await that testimony.
