If I download anything that tracks my location, I assume they will sell that information or be bought by someone who will. It's the only safe assumption to make.

Yeh I'm sure it's what Google do with an Android phones location, but I just don't understand why. How is my location valuable? How is where I've been useful?

I get the "Oh no. They can track where I may have gone." fear, I guess, but as others have said, so what? What is the actual worry? I ask because we use this app for our family, as its a great way to keep track of our teenage son, who otherwise, we often would not  be able to. Without going into details, we have a teenager with substance abuse issues and a few runaway attempts. This app helped us track him down when we otherwise may not have found him.

/would be happy to know if there is a better option than this one out there

Why is it bad?  Rebecca Schaeffer was stalked and murdered after CA DMV gave out her address to the wrong person.
