I gave the SO's Mom a "Strap Wrench" set for opening jars a few years ago...

At first she was like WTF?

And recently she went out of her way to say  "That was the most useful gift ever...I use it all the time"

Nose hair trimmer

If you told me as a kid, I'd not only enjoy owning one, but if I traveled a week or more that it NEEDS to come with...

AlgaeRancher: Mugato: I did get one that made me say WTF but then one day I got a fortune cookie that said "Anything is a dildo if you're brave enough".

That's no way to treat an expensive musical instrument.

You've got a hell of a lot to learn about rock and roll.

I kind of had the opposite experience - gifts that I appreciated at the time, but in retrospect think "WTF..?!", at least a little: my (maternal) grandmother was brilliant in a lot of ways, but I think maybe she wanted a granddaughter - when I was a young child, up to when I was about five years old, she'd often buy me things like "girl's magazines" and paper dolls; I didn't care that they weren't "gender appropriate" because i. I couldn't read anyway; ii. the paper dolls satiated my desire to be creative and change things; iii. I was ignorant of gender norms; and iv. I guess when I already felt that I was an outsider, socially, there was a fifty-fifty chance that I wasn't going to care about conforming to gender norms..?

My nephew gave me a .. I don't even know what it's called... but it is a cordless mini air compressor thing.  It has enough oomph to inflate car tires but you can't run air tools on it.
I already had a compressor so I was thinking, "what do I need this for?" but holy cow it is so much easier to carry it around than dragging the compressor.  And since I don't use any pneumatic tools, I gave away the compressor and now I only use the little dohickey for any inflating needs. And I can take it with me when we go to the lake and inflate all the floaties.

optikeye: When my Mom was coming down with Alzheimer's. She forgot Christmas.

In her panic she went to a drug store to get gifts for the 'kids'.....(4 adults at the time)....

And then lovingly wrapped them and decorated the packages.

They contained identical items.
Q Tips
Chapstick
BandAids
And Vaseline.

Everyone opens theirs and kinda looked puzzled and WTF?
I open mine and exclaim "WOW PARTY TOYS"

Sort of a similar story, but I got a bagful of half-price kitchen implements from a grocery store that was closing.  Siblings had "regular" presents she'd bought before she'd gotten dementia or it had progressed very much.  It was either that, or my sister had noticed that she hadn't bought anything for me and grabbed something at the last minute.
