It's pretty amazing how much the Spanish Empire farked up the world. "LatinX" is a terrible term. Maybe "Either Spanish, or descended from a culture farked by the Spanish" is a better term... but it might end up including everybody.

I'm Latinx and I think most Latinx people have bigger things to worry about than about how white people talk about them. Jobs, health care, pandemic, immigration just to name a few.

The word "Hispanic" tends to cover this.

I'm just going to continue to use Hispanic.

A lot of this group doesn't like that term, either. Probably better than "LatinX" though.

This is probably the best article I've read on the topic (although I'm not either "Hispanic" or "Latino" so YMMV): https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-the-difference-between-hispanic-vs-latino-5082005

particularly this section:

...it's best to respect whatever label a person gives themselves or to avoid labels altogether if that is their preference. In general, there are a number of different ways in which a Hispanic/Latino person might identify themselves (or, they may not have a preference):
- Hispanic
- Latino/Latina
- Latinx
- By their country of origin (e.g. a person may identify as "Salvadoran," from El Salvador or "Colombian," from Colombia)
- A hyphenated label (e.g., first-generation folx whose families are from a country outside of the U.S. might say that they are Salvadoran-American, or "my family is from El Salvador")
- American
In general practice, it's best never to ask someone about their ethnicity unless they bring it up. For some, this implies that they are a foreigner when they might have lived in the United States their whole life.

Remind me: who was it that ran on the "latinx is the new Latino" platform and is now up for reelection on the mid-term.

So we need a new term? I suggest Hismexipuertocuban.

Yes, I'm sure the small percentage who use Latinx unironic is the true wedge issue among different latino cultures across the US...

The term Latinx sound patronizing to me. Something that the Latino/Hispanic community never asked for.

I recognize the liberal academic urge to neutralize any gendered terms; but throwing an unpronounceable X at the end of Latino/Latina (or any other similar term) is just about the clumsiest way to go about it.

Who even started it? Where did it come from? I'm assuming it was a white person, but do we know which one?

That seems like a good way to miss out on a lot of interesting conversations.

Most people seem to have an affinity for their ancestors' cultures, asking them about  that is a way to learn about it.

I think the important thing is the motivation.  When I ask, I'm trying to learn something new.  That's different from trying to find your place on a racial superiority scale to better inform my method and degree of oppressing you.

2021-12-06 5:53:05 PM
I've been trying to explain that to people since Lantinx this started.

Typical Americans; "let us fix your language for you."

Common misconception.

We should really go all the way back and reverse the French propaganda that Central America has Latin heritage. Change it to Centrxl Americxns so no one is offended anymore.

Anyway it seems like anyone who cares about the distinction is checking "white" on all their forms and the "and above" section of the income bracket, so I'm sure it's not an academic pissing match or anything.

I think it is smart to find out where the person is from and refer to them as that. My culture is Puerto Rican. I can't tell you how often growing up I was referred to as Mexican. It is not that being Mexican are offense to me, it is that they are a completely different culture with different history, food, and traditions.

Yes.

Stop using it, you assholes.

Really, nothing is more offensive than "We are totally accepting of other cultures, except for these little things."

If you want "their" vote, maybe don't treat them as a monolithic voting bloc during campaigns and actually deliver on your promises.

Democrats suffer from acute affluenza. "What do you mean that day laborers / farmworkers can't take time from their jobs to go get vaccinated? Can't they just drive the 60+ miles to the clinic for the appointment they scheduled using their smartphones? Obviously these *people* are anti-vax and ignorant."

Gaythiest Elitist: Who even started it? Where did it come from? I'm assuming it was a white person, but do we know which one?

Probably not from a white person

Bowles argues against this notion. "White people did not make up Latinx," he says. "It was queer Latinx people... They are the ones who used the word. Our little subgroup of the community created that. It was created by English-speaking U.S. Latinx people for use in English conversation."
