I love Fred Astaire.

I am particularly fond of his thin and reedy singing voice which always gave his song interpretations a kind of wistful longing that a technically stronger singer probably couldn't impart.  Since I don't have a word for it I'll label it Chet Baker syndrome.

There is a reason Porter, Gershwin, and Berlin composed a lot of music specifically with him in mind.

Yeah, I imagine that the number of people under 50 who have seen one of his movies can be counted on a few hands.

But I guess they're banking on there being an audience for anything that includes singing and dancing...

The Gen Z writers think that the Gen X film executives think that the Boomer audience wants to see this kind of thing.

In fact, the audience will mostly be made up of former theater kids.

Maguire got into all kinds of trouble running in the shady underground poker circuit, often dealing with mobsters and what not. Many articles written about it and you can find some details in the book Molly's Game. He has some pretty lengthy gaps in his resume.

Garfield though has been steadily acting in several films a year every since his Spider-man run, but it's been a lot of independents. I'd say he hasn't been cursed at all, he just hasn't been in a stream of big summer blockbusters, and from all indications that seems like by choice.

He just did the live show. The original Billy has had a semi-steady career (and is almost in the MCU, he was in the 2015 FF).

Apparently, he took up skateboarding in his late 70s.

He also had a clause in his will that his life never be portrayed in a movie.  So, that's a little bad omen to overcome.

Put me down in the "doubtful" column for the successful casting of either Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers.  This is going to end up being a lame attempt at a noble cause.  There was absolutely nothing lame about Fred and Ginger.

Old white men who run the studios and hate that they're not being catered to anymore.

Can't wait for the veneration of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe to come to a screeching halt with the death of the last baby boomer.

If it's done well then it's for everybody. Go look at Netflix or IMDB and tell me how many of those movies are 'for you'. There's always a market for a movie that tells a good story. The story of Fred Astaire is a good story. It's not all about you.

I'd never want the world to revolve around me. And I'm more than willing to be surprised (for example: the recent Stan and Ollie biopic was one of my favorites of its year.)  And most of my favorite films were, to be kind, non-starters at the global box office, so it's not just about money (for me, not the business that produces the films). I'm just surprised that things of this nature get greenlit because it seems that there'd be no route for a return on the investment for those ponying up the cash.  All I'm saying.

Well, I will say my usual "who is this for?" Is when there's a remake of an older property done in a way that fans of the original will hate it and the new audience has no particular reason to care- ie the writers/producers just relied on name recognition from people too far removed.

A perfect example would be the African American cast Honeymooners remake they did a few years ago.
