I don't understand why it's considered a paradox by the quoted guy in the article

are people really unable to fathom how people can feel content in their daily life, but think their country is heading in wrong directions?

edmo: Might as well be Murica

yeah, basically

Americans were at 90% content pre-pandemic and it's only dropped 8 points down to 82%. and we're at 63% wrong direction

Just imagine being able to feel happiness despite the disastrous state of politics.

NO! I must maintain focus on the shortcomings of elected officials .

That sounds like every American right now.  For many people, fretting about imminent doom is a lot of fun.  The "civil war" soundbites I read are like this.

I have a great job, tons of money saved away, lots of friends, and great kids. I am pretty content.

The nation has become a shiatshow.

"I am personally comfortable, but the fragile state of political leadership in this country makes it terribly obvious that we are a single election cycle away from turning one of the most prosperous countries in world history into just another failed state naked oligarchy" isn't a contradictory position

Even Best Korea has a good chunk of personally comfortable people.

60% of the people think that single election happened and are pushing back against those who claim a "Mandate".  Mandate in the last election is VERY debatable.

I think it is absolutely fair to say that, because it's 2 different questions.

Take my situation, for example...  I have a good, stable job, a house, a car, I'm 25 years married, and my kids are both in college doing well.  So, yeah, I would say that my life is going okay.

However - and here's the thing.  I will also say that this country is in a bad way.  Because there are entirely TOO MANY people that are nowhere near as fortunate as I have been.  There are TOO MANY people that are absolutely in a bad way.  Especially when you consider how much of that bad way is driven by racism, stupidity, and greed.  Doubly so when you consider how easy much of it is to fix, but our useless, ineffective government refuses to do anything resembling the right thing.

In short, I am not the only person by which you measure how the country is doing. Yeah, this country is in a really bad way.  But not everyone is suffering the same way.

I may have to divorce my wife because she suggested we meet some friends for pancakes at like 10:30 on Sunday.

I had to tell her, "Honey, that's brunch and brunch is wrong." She looked confused. Hopefully some therapy helps.

Nearly 80% of the country say they are content with life, yet "60% are convinced the country is in a bad way."

I would liken this to falling past the fifth floor while still being able to say, "So far, so good".

Those are separate questions. I'm generally content with my life, but the country is going backwards fast. We're a failed state on life support.

Exactly.  Nothing paradoxical about being comfortable in a car but also concerned the driver is headed down the highway towards Ohio, metaphorically

It was way more fun to make a zombie plan back in the day than it currently is to need to research countries that my family could plausibly GTFO to if Trump gets back into power and goes full dictator.

No, Cuba has a failed Economic model.   This being Fark, you might really think that Communism would have worked had it not been for the embargo, doncha' ?

Cuba has no Right Wingers in power, yet it's as racist as anyplace else is.  Both Castros, Guevara, and Diaz-Canel are all blancos.

Surely "Flushed Away" can't be obscure for the Fark audience. Am I the only parent around here who enjoyed that movie???
