In the eighties  I remember a lot of reactionary people wanting to lock up(or worse) AIDS patients due to their fear of the virus
It is funny how this time reactionary people are denying Covid is a threat*

*though back around February 2020 a lot of reactionary people I know were really worried about Covid, until Fox and Trump told them it was BS, but don't you dare call them sheeple

There is a pretty direct line between AIDS and COVID. Efforts to destigmatize HIV-positivity led to enhanced medical privacy, which led to HIPAA, which was weaponized to conceal the toll of the current pandemic.

Things might have been different if the media had been suffused with images of COVID patients packing ICUs like sardines in a tin.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Kirby_(activist)

1992 Benetton advertising campaign

Following the Life publication, the Kirby family allowed the clothing company United Colors of Benetton to use the image in a 1992 advertising campaign, feeling that its story would reach a worldwide audience. Fallout from the campaign came from many sources, including the Catholic Church which felt that the image was an inappropriate allusion to the historical imagery of the Virgin Mary cradling Jesus Christ after the crucifixion.[citation needed]

In 2012, Frare told Life that David's father Bill Kirby expressed the family's feelings on the use of the picture by United Colors of Benetton when he told her "Listen, Therese. Benetton didn't use us, or exploit us. We used them. Because of them, your photo was seen all over the world, and that's exactly what David wanted."[citation needed]

It's in the Wikipedia article I linked to, but the family allowed Benetton to use the photo in their ads around the world to bring a more visceral awareness to the AIDS crisis. It wasn't used to "sell" anything, even if they're technically ads; the family was adamant about the photograph not being used for profit (nor could the photographer sell the photo, only license it without compensation). The photo was originally published in Time Magazine.

Republicans see AIDS as an easy way to get rid of people that they deem as undesirable. Nothing more, nothing less. If there was an AIDS like disease that was ravaging the evangelical community you'd see no end to the funds being thrown at it. Simply put, Republicans don't give a shiat about AIDS because it doesn't hurt their base (some of who are still actively cheering it on) as much as it hurts the Democrat base. It just shows a cult like lack of empathy for anyone that isn't exactly like them. This isn't new, the GOP has been a cult for a very long time and it will continue to openly act like a cult and become more dangerous over time.

There have been plenty of this sort of news report aired on the teevees.  Usually anything identifiable is blurred out, but you can't really see the patients anyways under the miles of tubes and shiat.

Do a GIS for "icu covid" for examples.

Oh, and the Catholic Church complained about the photograph, claiming it was too similar to the image of the Pietà and was therefore offenisve to them.

Not the guy dying of AIDS. That wasn't offensive, despite Jesus' dedication to the sick. The coincidental resemblance to a religious arrangement of bodies was the offensive part to them.

The Church never seems to miss an opportunity for the worst possible take.

yeah more of the same, but in the current era they don't even have pseudo intellectuals to give the veneer of anything remotely smart.  Now its all proud ignorance, intolerance, and spite.

I heard him speaking the other day. He passes James Inhofe as the most willfully ignorant asshole in the Senate.
And he's enormously proud of being the dumbest fuquing asshole most Americans have ever heard of, and THAT Is something given who many proudly stupid assholes there are right now in Murica
