TV we binged Alex Rider season 2 on IMDB.  Fun semi-silly teen boy spy thriller.

Movies we watched Wolf at the theater last evening.  As one other viewer leaving the theater once the lights went up said "that's 90 minutes I'll never get back".  If you are tempted by the trailer.  Don't be.  It's not some supernatural thriller about a boy who thinks he's a wolf.  It's a "drama" about a "facility" where young people with Species Identity Disorder go to learn to become human again and acknowledge that they aren't squirrels, horses, dogs, cats etc.

Can anyone name an end-of-the-world movie that doesn't use Beethoven's Symphony No.7 in A major op.92 - II, Allegretto?

The Power of the Dog (2021, New Zealand)
For me, this is the best movie of the year. It's a western, set in the 1920s in Montana, and is directed by Jane Campion. The plot is subtle, but absorbing.

The Humans (2021)
This is a family drama set in a claustrophobic New York apartment at Thanksgiving. As a play, it won a Tony. Three of the actors have been nominated for Oscars. The story is interesting, but also very sad and upsetting. Amy Schumer plays one of the daughters, but this is not a comedy.

Girl With a Pearl Earring (2003)
A slow, beautiful movie about a girl working in Vermeer's house who becomes the model for his most famous painting. Starring Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth.

The Handmaiden (2016, South Korea, in Korean and Japanese)
An erotic thriller set in colonial Korea. Directed by Park Chan-wook, the director of Oldboy. Very beautifully photographed, with lots of lesbian sex scenes. The story is interesting too.

Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn (2021, Romania)
A couple films themselves having sex. The recording is leaked online. The woman involved is a teacher at a junior high school, and the school authorities and the parents have a meeting to decide whether to fire her. The movie has an unusual structure: the first part is porn, in the second part we follow the woman around Bucharest, the third part is a type of dictionary, and the fourth shows the school meeting. There is a lot in the movie about hypocrisy, fascism, politics, etc.

Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012)
An unusual, beautiful movie with elements of magic realism. The actress Quvenzhané Wallis was six when the movie was filmed, and was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar.

Benedetta (2021, France)
Set in a convent in 17th century Italy. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, but this movie is more like one of his art films, not like Showgirls or Basic Instinct. However, there are several lesbian sex scenes.

Psychopusher: TWX: It was helpful that Space:1999 and other shows from the '60s onward were made when the studios actually filmed them on celluloid, and that motion picture camera lenses an techniques had matured. Some shows like Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and Battlestar Galactica show their age simply due to the styling (too much disco-fashion) but most still look pretty good as they can be remastered to whatever contemporary quality level is popular.

Oh, Space: 1999 was very disco-forward.  Those onesies with the wide belt wouldn't have been out of place on the dance floor if it weren't for the zipper down the shoulder and prominent "Moonbase Alpha" patches in an attempt to look futuristic.  The rest of the aesthetic though was very Gerry Anderson for the time, especially the Eagle shuttles.

Space:1999 didn't have roller disco entertainment.
