What I watched this past week:
All About Eve - Brilliant stuff. Bette David's last line: *chef's kiss*
Pig - Really liked this, but I could have used more pig scenes.
2046 - Tony Leung might be the greatest actor of all time.
The Power of the Dog - Just a beautiful puzzle movie where all the pieces matter, especially the last one. Incredible setting, too.
Downhill Racer - A mess as a narrative, but great looking, especially those POV shots.
Listening to Kenny G - This is a lot of fun and really smart about the nature of making and judging music.

Favorite armageddon movie? Dr. Strangelove.

Cowboy Bebop - It was... passable. Might have been really good if there wasn't a twenty year old anime that set the bar way too high.

Some Forgettable Netflix Crap with the Rock - I honestly don't even remember the name. Red something? I think it was a jewel heist movie or something. Beats waiting in traffic I guess.

Solar Opposites X-Mas Special - This show really grew on me. Rick and Morty without the nihilism and alcohol abuse.

Always Sunny Season Whatever - Time to call it a day. Didn't laugh once. Not even a sensible chuckle. I'll keep watching because I'm farking stupid.

Freddy Got Fingered - Needed to watch that a couple times to forget about how bad Always Sunny got. Always a welcome palate cleanser.

My YouTube feed recently recommended S1E1 of Space: 1999, but the Shout Factory remaster.  I only vaguely remember watching it as a kid so I thought, why not?  So I watched it.  Damn good quality -- if it weren't for the 4:3 aspect ratio it could almost pass for something filmed today in an ironic retro-futuristic aesthetic.  (Also, now that I'm older and have watched a lot of shows, I realized just how signature Gerry Anderson that show is.)  But then I realized Shout Factory have a website, Shout Factory TV, where they not only have the rest of the episodes, they have a crapload of old shows you can stream online with no login required -- actually there's no way to sign up in the first place.  So, yeah.  Now I'm hooked on watching both seasons of that.

(Not a plug, just pleasantly surprised you can watch all this stuff and they don't even want to skim your personals to sell on giant spam lists.)  Most of the stuff there is stuff I've never watched, never heard of, or don't want to watch, but there are a few gems there.

That's because literally everyone in every shot is chewing the scenery.  When literally everyone is over the top, no one is.

I remember watching The Day After when it premiered. At the time MAD was a very real possibility. There's nothing more frightening than a disaster movie that can actually happen.

Watched the first episode of Angel. How anyone can see that and suspect that Joss Whedon molests actresses, I'll never understand. A taskmaster yes, molester no.

Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain (2021)- An in-depth dive into the rollercoaster life of the sometimes controversial chef/journalist. Pretty well-done. Well edited. I was aware of the controversy about the AI deepfake voice-over but ultimately didnt feel like it changed my opinion of the film. Heartbreaking, interesting, enjoyed it.

Rons Gone Wrong (2021)- For the first ten minutes I could swear I had already seen this movie until my daughter pointed out that I was thinking of The Mitchells Vs The Machines (2021). It's the not-too-distant future. Every kid has a trashcan-sized Beymax-like (Big Hero 6 (2014)) droid instead of a cellphone. A poor kid gets a defective droid that doesnt play by the rules. Shenanigans ensue. It was ok-ish. Kids liked it.

QotW: Dogma (1999). It may not be the first apocolyptic movie that comes to most people's minds but it is quite well done. It's funny. It's touching. Love it. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) is a close second. Shiny and chrome!

Birds of Prey - was just OK, won't watch again. Like seeing Rosie Perez again, tho

A couple episodes into Hawkeye - so far just OK.  The LARPER battle scenes in episode 2 were very funny.

That popped up fore me too but the description was basically "a movie with these two guys" which tells me there isn't anything else about the movie of any significance.  Netfilx has a number of descriptions like that -"starring this guy and has been watched over _____ times" .  i don't mind, keeps me from wasting any time on them.

Passion Fish - Rewatched for the first time since it came out (free on Prime, and I like Mary McDonnell). Holds up really well. None of the main characters are where they want to be or where they thought they'd end up, and I like watching them help each other towards a better place - quietly, naturally, without Big Important Drama.

Fantastic Mr. Fox: "Hold on. I've just intercepted a high frequency radio signal with a can." I lost it.

I have been re-watching Star Trek Enterprise recently. I am enjoying it more than I expected. Any episode with Shran, played by Jeffrey Coombs, is gold.
Lots of good apocalypse movies mentioned already, what about Miracle Mile and The Quiet Earth?

It was helpful that Space:1999 and other shows from the '60s onward were made when the studios actually filmed them on celluloid, and that motion picture camera lenses an techniques had matured.  Some shows like Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and Battlestar Galactica show their age simply due to the styling (too much disco-fashion) but most still look pretty good as they can be remastered to whatever contemporary quality level is popular.

Hawkeye - still going well. Love the interaction between the characters. B+

Rewatched:
Apocalypse Now: Redux - hadn't watched the original cut in years so decided to try this version. Good but damn no wonder they cut the crap out of it. Way too long, the plantation scene was unnecessary. Give an A to the original, this version is a strong B+

Armageddon movie:
The Mist - I liked the story but this movie had such a great ending that ripped you apart.

Since the world didn't really end in that movie I'd have to go with On the Beach for a true doomsday downer.

rewatched Save Yourselves! from last year this weekend- a twee young couple decides to 'unplug' for a week in the woods and are the last to find out that Earth has been invaded.  it's silly, and as much apocalypse as i'm really up for- tho earlier i did also dig up The Seventh Sign from 1988.  such trashy, much fun.  watched Loopers for the first time. wtf was going on with 3rd Rock's eyebrows?  had them drawn on thicker than last year's tiktok girls; it was distracting thru the whole film.  Deadpool 2: i honestly saw some stuff i had missed the first 37 times.  (don't judge me, the SO is in boycrush with RR)  and The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus seems like a different movie ever time i watch it.  i sometimes think that Terry Gilliam must be so caught up in being Terry Gilliam, that to him the rest of the world seems to be at a bit of a remove.

Empire of the Sun (1985) - I continue my watch of Spielberg movies I've never seen.  Young Christian Bale goes to a POW camp in China during WW2.  A few things stood out to me.  First of all, this almost works as an alternate Batman origin story.  Mini-Batman is shown as a choirboy with a golden falsetto voice to the gravelly 'I'm Batman' voice.  There is some crazy plane stunt work near the end, with P-51 Mustangs strafing an airfield about 10 feet off the deck.  Impressive flying.  A decent watch, Rating C+

Other than that, I've just been catching up on Season 3 of Cobra Kai.

Double Indemnity - Billy Wilder was a genius.  Combine him with Raymond Chandler's skillful dialogue, and you have gold.

The Snapper - Second in Roddy Doyle's Barrytown Trilogy.  It's not The Commitments, but still good.

Didn't see quite as much this week, but on Thursday or so I wanted to make "Omicron Persei 8" jokes to Mrs. Fireproof regarding the Omicron variant, so I showed her two classic Futurama episodes with Lrrr and Ndnd. Namely their introduction with their intense fandom of "Single Female Lawyer" and the Popplers episodes. She really enjoyed both of them, despite the former not being on Hulu and having to watch it on some weird pirate YouTube channel that zoomed halfway into every other shot as some method of avoiding the copyright bots. It was irritating, but it was better than not seeing it. Weird how many episodes are missing from Hulu.

Friday night Mrs. F has dinner with a friend, and I had read that morning that the movie had some problematic moments that hadn't aged well, so I decide maybe it's a good time to watch Charlie Chaplain's Modern Times. The two problematic moments were: 1) The love interest of The Tramp was underage, maybe 16 or 17, and 2) Some racist musical number in the end.

Honestly, the first one is something you almost have to be looking for to notice, and I didn't see the second at all. Must have cut it in this version (Criterion on HBO Max) or something. I go back to the online thread where I learned about the problems and ask if it's been cut, and learn that it probably was.

Overall, the movie is pretty solid, but I don't enjoy it quite as much as City Lights, which I saw maybe two weeks ago. Maybe it's that the novelty of Chaplain and his semi-silent era has worn off for me, maybe it's that the plot of this one is thin to the point of feeling like it's mostly a collection of job-related skits, or maybe it's that I was nervously expecting to see the racist song just as Mrs. F to returned home. (She arrived just as the movie ended)

Does anyone know more about the racist number and what cuts do/don't have it? Was it just there and such a minor thing that I missed it?

King Richard was really good, much better than I expected. Great cast, great acting. Uplifting story.

A Time To Kill (1996) After I watched the Arbury trial, my memory was jogged for me to watch this. Good cast, but I did a lot of eye-rolling at the racism pretending to be virtue-signaling, and the stereotypically good and evil sides. Also in real life, this never would have happened.

And I insomnia-watched some tacky junk: The Queen of Versailles.Basically, a really bad Bravo reality show episode. And it's still going on in real life. The house isn't finished.

TV we binged Alex Rider season 2 on IMDB.  Fun semi-silly teen boy spy thriller.

Movies we watched Wolf at the theater last evening.  As one other viewer leaving the theater once the lights went up said "that's 90 minutes I'll never get back".  If you are tempted by the trailer.  Don't be.  It's not some supernatural thriller about a boy who thinks he's a wolf.  It's a "drama" about a "facility" where young people with Species Identity Disorder go to learn to become human again and acknowledge that they aren't squirrels, horses, dogs, cats etc.

Freaked me out as a kid. I am a boomer and we went through the whole duck and cover BS in schools, and had extreme anxiety about nuclear war when I was young. I bet there are kids going through this now about school shootings. The anxiety can fark them up for life.
