thornhill: BuzzFeed won a Pulitzer exposing China's detention of muslims.

It's not all silly stuff.

Apparently the silly stuff pays the bills for the serious journalism.

hey now, which friends characters the world's most beautiful twins would be based on how they like their garlic bread is *hardly* silly.

It also seems to pay the bills to oppose unions, since theirs walked out the day they went public.

Also, the Russian Trump Pee-Pee tape that everybody was jerking themselves off about for like 4 years, but never materialized.

Maybe the pee tape doesn't exist, but it seems pretty clear that Putin has something on Trump, and there's video evidence. (My theory has always been sex with minors given Trump's behavior with young women and that it's one of the last remaining third rails in politics.)

You think Putin doesn't have control on Trump's loans?  The most likely reason for any pee tape existing is that whoever was responsible for filming such things didn't have a "need to know" that Putin already owned Trump lock, stock, and barrel.

Suddenly having Russia (and presumably DeutschBeank) no longer throwing money at him would be a huge thing.  That and Putin certainly has all the *real* financial records.

Trump has zero shame about anything that might be on tape.  He might pay a good chunk to keep his whores silent, but it isn't a big thing for him.  His financial status, on the other hand, pretty much defines his self image.  And Putin completely owns it.

I suspect that any tapes of Trump are in the bottom of a drawer somewhere.  Effectively forgotten because of so many better levers on Trump.  But still there, because if it was important enough to stage, it was important enough to keep the tapes (also suspect that they don't tell the "keeper of the tapes" for the same reason they didn't tell the "creator of the tapes").

/calling it a myth might as well be true
//maybe it is true, maybe not
///a brilliant red herring, to distract the critical hold Putin obviously has over Trump

Three members of Buzzfeednews won a Pulitzer for a story on Chinese concentration camps. With all sincerity, kudos to them! That's an extraordinary effort.  That does not mean that suddenly Buzzfeed is one of the news big dogs, that they're a full fledged outfit like WaPo or NYT.  You know, the ones who earn Pulitzer year after year, often for their entire staffs. "I'm going to check out Buzzfeed, they have the real scoop on things!"

It's still a tiny news division of journalists who are joined at the hip to an internet clickbait swamp.  If winning one Pulitzer is enough to give Buzzfeed legitimacy, y'all got a lot of apologizing to do to NewsCorp!

Anyway, the question now:  if BuzzfeedNews is running a deficit, and leeching off of the entertainment site's cash flow, that's not sustainable. What publicly traded company, responsible to its shareholders, is going to keep that going?  Either the News site starts to earn its keep, or it gets spun off of shiatcanned. My money is on sold off to someone else... perhaps Jeff Bezos, who has been able to bring the Washington Post to profitability without hollowing it out.
