Saw them many years ago with David Bowie and The Georgia Satellites. John Taylor is an amazing bass player, check out "Rio".

The last time I saw Duran Duran a number of years ago, a member of their crew swung by the section I was in and picked a couple of people to get seat upgrades.  Not me, of course, because I'm not good looking enough.

I saw them at Clutch Cargo's in Detroit in 1982. It was better than I thought it was going to be, but I honestly don't recall all that much of it. Beer and...other things were involved.

when you like playing music and being on stage while getting paid very handsomely for it, you don't retire as long as the physical ability to do those things is there.

retirement takes two of those things off the table.

if it pays so well, they can afford to build stages in their soundproof basements and play "music" to the contents of their hearts

It's a guilty pleasure being a Gen Xer. Love Duran Duran.

John Taylor is seriously underestimated as a bass player!

Rock/pop is solely the domain of the young. Nobody over the age of 40 has any business getting on stage. You can disagree, but you're wrong.

bio that just came out about 3-4 months ago, very fun read.  It ends with, "in Jan 2020, the band convened to announce a world tour for summer / fall 2020.  about a month later, the world shut down.  the end!"

and funny anecdote; early 80s as they are the kings of MTV, they hired a roadie named "Simon".  whenever the cast or crew asked for Simon to appear, inevitably, the wrong Simon would show up.  one day a frustrated band member said to Simon Le Bon, after the 800th "wrong Simon" mixup, "do you have a farking middle name?"

simon responded, "yes, Charles."

"well then that farkin' settles it!  From now on, your name is 'Charlie'."

Book:  "To this day, 35 years on, the band and their inner circle call Simon 'Charlie'."

They were always good live and this show would be a 100% panty dropper for women in my age group. That said, I'm pretty sure they came through SoCal recently and I barely noticed.

John Taylors auto biography is an excellent read also.

Playing music to crowds of adoring fans sound like a kick ass retirement to me.

Clutch Cargo's, now there's a place I haven't heard about in a long time.

I read their bio - they all went broke after their peak. It is is difficult to keep paying for mansions, cars, yachts and models when your music sales decline. They signed a bad contract when they were young that took away a big chunk of their royalties.

the_end_is_rear: John Taylors auto biography is an excellent read also.

huh, i should look for that.  a very casual Duran Duran fan but obv know all the hits.  He's quoted at length in the book.  He, the Taylors and Nick Rhodes are quoted at length but it seemed Simon didn't do a lot of participation (or at least wasn't sourced a whole lot).  very entertaining read.

and yeah, Taylor, jesus, it sounds like he had a terrible drug and alcohol problem, of which he, in the book, is very open about. and he talks about idolizing Nile Rodgers' bass playing, and emulating it (as obv, Taylor is an absolute motherfarker on bass).  he talks of a NYC show at I think Giants Stadium, and Rodgers going backstage and just raving out Taylor's playing.  "Can you show me how you do that one riff one Song Z?"

Taylor is like, "i could have died and gone to farking heaven then and there.  My IDOL is asking ME, how to play a bass riff?  I don't think my feet touched the ground for weeks!"  ha.

Duran Duran is the name of the villain in Barbarella, an amazing documentary about outer space.

My husband also was at that show! He remembers that it was extremely hot & they set up fans to cool the audience.

Saw them with Chic a few years back. Great combo, and Nile Rodgers come on stage a bit later to play with them as well. Great show.

New Age Redneck: Saw them many years ago with David Bowie and The Georgia Satellites. John Taylor is an amazing bass player, check out "Rio".

The extended version of Girls On Film where John just goes off near the end is way better than anything on Rio.

If only Andy and the others could reconcile.  I want to hear Reportage.

YesWe'reThereYet: If only Andy and the others could reconcile.  I want to hear Reportage.

Nick, I believe, is on record as saying he'd be open to working with Andy to make any tweaks his guitar parts for any eventual release of Reportage, which the remaining members all seem to want to see happen.  That's definitely a positive sign.

However, I'm not really optimistic for Reportage.  Astronaut with Andy was mostly awful, and whatever it was that led to his dismissal from the band (depression?  substance abuse?) would only have gotten worse by the time Reportage was recorded.
