2 in 3 say one relative always drinks too much at holiday gatherings

HAVE YOU MET MY FAMILY????
You have to drink a lot to be around them.
I grew up with the n-word being thrown around at every holiday gathering.

One relative is a virgin?

What an odd stock photo.

Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, most families are complaining about that one relative who doesn't drink at all, and just sits there quietly judging everyone for having a good time.

2021-12-06 10:26:34 AM
Nobody in my family really drinks. My dad was in a beer mood in the summer so my mom went to get him some Coors. She bought six single cans because she didn't know you could buy beer in six packs.

This article makes me wonder: Is there some conservative who complains that their uncle gets drunk and rants that trans women should be able to use whatever bathroom they choose and that racial equality needs constant effort on the part of all peoples?

2021-12-06 10:28:14 AM
Operational definition of, "too much," please? An effective amount of alcohol to intoxicate as it is created to do? House burning, pants shiatting, falling through shower curtain while giving an inlaw drunken head?

I don't have any siblings, so I have to play "drunk uncle" for my cousin's kids. It's a tough job, to be sure, but the pay is worth it.

This will be the first holiday where there's no annoying drunk uncle. Yup, just me and my nieces and nephews and a bottle of Johnny Walker.

Well I guess I am the drinker in the family. It's been years since I've done anything real embarrassing. But at least I can say I have never pissed mine nor anyone else's pants.

This country has a ton of insecure losers.  It's not news, it's Fark.

2021-12-06 10:45:11 AM
Well that can't be right. In my family, my other two family members never drink during the holidays.

In fact, most of the time, they usually just sit there staring at me in stony silence with a look of concern on their faces.

2021-12-06 10:46:47 AM
Define "too much". I know some people who think any drinking is too much. Still others think that any drinking at family gatherings or when kids are present is inappropriate. Then there's those people who still drink like every day is frosh week.

Personally I don't consider drinking an issue until the drinker's behavior is a problem but a lot of other people set the bar much lower than that.

2021-12-06 10:47:53 AM
I don't drink nearly enough.

2021-12-06 10:48:28 AM
this seems like an easily solved problem. limit the amount of booze you put out or offer for guests and/or dont plan to host people for more than a few hours

My family doesn't drink (Appalachian conservative Christian, everything short of breathing is a sin) and most of them have a permanent stick up their rear. White bread is more exciting than this bunch. I think drinking would actually help them.

Most of these teetotaler articles throw around some pretty lowball numbers. "What's that, you had 3 drinks during 8 hours at a party? You should feel guilty and start going to AA!"

Is it really that difficult to not make an ass of yourself in public? However much it sucks hanging out with relatives, it'll be over in a few hours - if you can't hold it together that long how do you even function in society?

I've managed to alienate most of my wife's side of the family with my drinking.

/SUCCESS!

When  I found out Thanksgiving eve was the busiest evening for bars I told my father-in-law and he couldn't believe people didn't want to visit family and needed alcohol to get through the holidays

If you have to get drunk in order to tolerate family reunions, then perhaps you should skip family reunions.

I'm that uncle.  Nothing but MAGA chumps and apathetic tools in my family, and they all want to talk about the the homos, the commies. the atheists... the Liberals!  Sir, I are the liberals!  So I don't go to family things much because you can't be there without drinking and being the whipping boy while drunk is no fun.

This. I don't really care about volume, as long as you're not being belligerent or unable to walk.

My parents (who drink a maximum of 1 wine cooler every 6 months) start giving me disapproving looks after my 2nd drink or so, which I find kind of hilarious.  They generally start clutching pearls after the 2nd drink  It's a hint I need to keep going.  Luckily my uncle flies in from out of town, buys a few cases, and says "Listen, we need to finish all this beer I bought before I fly out in a few days, otherwise it'll sit in the fridge all year, and we'll be drinking expired beer next year."

What a cool uncle.

I still love this idea that you can brag about getting black-out drunk, risking public safety and your own liver for the sake of a buzz. But, Say something about using marijuana to relieve stress and relax, and you can almost feel the judgement in the air.

Our country, and our culture, has some strange priorities sometimes.

There were a couple of xmas parties with the in-laws where I got snockered enough that I fell asleep pretty early. Not really a big deal as that crew drinks more than I do, generally.

Now that I have easy access to legal THC, I've found that a couple of puffs and a couple of beers does nicely. Much better than main-lining scotch all evening.

Our standards all vary, but I think problem drinkers can be expected to have brought their own booze. Which is not to mention if you're throwing a party, are busy with food or entertaining, happen to have a liquor cabinet for an occasional drink of your own, the serious drinkers will be helping themselves to your liquor cabinet when you turn your back. And complaining about your selection!

oh I have been having fun with this.

This summer I was at my moms for a family thing soon after CT legalized. I chose a nice quiet time to mention I wasnt sure if I was supposed to have brought marijuana and what was the etiquette now.

I was mostly just ignored but my moms husband confessed to having eaten some brownies in his day (hes 83)

Exactly. What is wrong with a day or two where you don't judge and condemn your family members that are willing to show up knowing you will judge them as you do all year long.

You people are the reason many hate the holidays.

Now go buy some foreign made widget manufactured by questionably treated laborers so you can return it the next day, so our ports stay clogged and the hole in your soul seems just a tiny bit smaller.

"Party foul: 2 in 3 say one relative always drinks too much at holiday gatherings"

I guess I'm one of the 1/3.  I have way more than one relative who drinks to much.  As in, aunt has done time in rehab and uncle decided to get the kitchen wall knocked out to expand the liquor cabinet while she was in rehab.  And here's a picture of my mom's basement

Fark user imageView Full Size

Not all of my family are on the 'can't be in a house with alcohol in it', but many are of the 'will be falling down drunk if they get started drinking'

/was visiting while my aunt decided to start drinking again after rehab, but she was also on pills that don't mix with alcohol, so she was fall-down drunk by 10am
//tried calling my uncle, a paramedic, what do do as she had a head wound, but he was in a dead spot so ended up calling 911
///uncle was then upset that his coworkers found out
////and that's not even a third of the alcoholics in my family
//has considered joining ACOA, but not a fan of 12 step programs
