To be fair, Beto is also betting that the grid fails and kills many Texans so that he has a snowball's chance in the election.  The difference is that only one of these people has any power to stop it.

Beto is is an idiot for running on the "care about your fellow humans" platform.  This is farking Texas.

You think a majority of Texans won't vote to maintain a separate power grid even it kills a few hundred people just because they love the ego stroke it gives them to feel special for being "independent?"

And its not just Texans, most people will vote for someone who makes them feel special than someone who helps out someone that isn't them

Maybe, maybe not. But the fact remains that Greg Abbott is a low-life piece of dog sh*t who should be pushed down a very tall staircase.

"Betting"?  Has Abbott actually winterized the TX energy grid?  If not, then he's stating fact.  The other side of that is ensuring retail customers have fixed rates on an annual basis so they cant get a surprise $50,000 electric bill for one weeks worth of service.
But as you say, this is TX.  The state where at least half of the people there think Abbott can build, maintain, and defend a wall with Mexico but can't afford health care for everyone.

When I was in school a grade in the high 90s was really good. The percentage of days the grid works and the percentage of Texans who survived are both in the high 90s.

I think that if it weren't for the Texas GQP's intense voter suppression tactics then a majority of people in the state would vote for a 'care about your fellow humans' platform.

A majority of Texans WANT other Texans to die so the ones that don't die can show how they are the RealTexans. Like most of the GQP, the way they measure success is against others' failures. There's no attempt to help anyone. All their effort is spent rigging the game against people other than themselves.

Texas loves owning people.

Texas gave up part of its land to keep slavery.

Killing a few people to own the libs is classic Texas.

I disagree in this instance.  I mean, everything you saidbis correct, but it's possible that enough people will remember being coldin the dark and afraid. That hits to the gut and can cut throughbthe usualnpolitical 'team' partisanship.  Just saying the potential is there.  A lot may depend on thisbwinter.

The people getting moved are from corporate hq. Middle management and aspiring executives, the very definition of the petit bourgeoisie. While they may be nominally more liberal on personal freedoms, they still default to "money is king." Whomever promises lower taxes automatically piques their interest.

Depends on where in CA they come from- there's plenty of Trumpkins there, and some of them are moving to TX because our regressive politics sound great to them.  It's not just techies moving to Austin.

Can't remember where I saw it, but Beto beat Cancun Cruz among native/ long time Texans.  It was the newcomers who gave Cruz his margin of victory.  Don't remember the exact cutoff fir newcomer, but it was at least arriving in TX in the past several years.

While there's talk about will we have another failure if there's a cold snap, there can also be crisis in a big enough heat wave, even if the system is supposedly built to take the heat.

Another point that I want TX Dem candidates to hammer relentlessly is the fact that some people made a killing off our pain, and our gas bills will be going up to help pay them.  It's like price gouging on gas after a hurricane, only bigger.

A bare majority of Texas voters. I keep waiting for enough people to finally get pissed off enough to flood the polls, but it hasn't happened yet. Apathy keeps these chowderheads in charge, and I even have friends who are like "politics doesn't effect me" or "nothing will really change."

Looking forward to another series of totally avoidable catastrophes.

my dad used to work as a power station and distributing designer for the local utility.  when the outages happened last year i asked if he had any insight as to what went wrong.  here is a basic summary of what he said.

When I went to the national conventions the dumbest, most arrogant assholes you'd meet were the the Texas energy commission.  they openly mocked people for building redundancies and safety margins into their systems. they didn't see any value in preventive maintenance or stress testing systems.  for years when they needed new power they would put up small, inefficient, nat gas generators (inefficient because they were small) and absolutely refused to connect to the larger grid because they didn't want to listen to anyone else about anything, ever.  they are absolutely convinced that if something is working today it'll work forever and because it'll work forever they are geniuses.  I feel sorry for the people being affected but i'm absolutely loving watching those assholes sit on their own balls.  that said, they won't do shiat once this is over to fix anything, not just because they are lazy but because they have no idea how.

My guess is that Tx will have a normal winter and they will be fine.  if they have another serious cold snap the only thing that will change is Ted Cruze will charter a private plane so he doesn't get seen fleeing the state again.

I would point out that living in Tx is a voluntary activity.

In 2020 it was 52-46 for Trump

Texans don't need big government electricity mandates. They can stay warm the natural way by developing cold immunity, shivering and growing more body hair when the grid fails next time.

The local RW troll population talks about how everyone should just get their own generator.  First off, those things ain't cheap.  Also this notion that it's not reasonable to expect government to provide basic services is libertarianism at its looniest.  This is the richest and most powerful country in the history of the world.  It should go  without saying that it should provide the basics, which includes power grids up to a reasonable standard.

I know this argument well. Hell I agree with this argument by and large. It's not easy or even feasible to relocate sometimes.

But on the other hand... Texas. I say this without an attempt at humor, but I would rather be homeless in any other state than live in Texas. And I know more than a few former runaways who found that shiat just as  intolerable.

In a real way it is voluntary. ... you just gotta be desperate enough.
