What prompts a zookeeper to test an animal for COVID?

Throw them in with the hippos. They'll learn what cranky actually means in their last moments.

The hippos have shown no symptoms "other than runny noses"

I will never complain again when I'm trying to get a kid to stand still and let me wipe their runny nose.  And just how big a Puffs tissue would you need to clean the nostrils on a hippo?

Mucosal expression as a symptom of covid is not a typical immune response in humans, owing to it's nature as a novel virus. You may be confusing SARS-2 with other less serious illnesses for which we have innate resistance to.

When the test positive are checking to see if it is the same as the human strains?  Are there many viruses that infect all mammals with the same strain/type?

WillofJ2: When the test positive are checking to see if it is the same as the human strains?  Are there many viruses that infect all mammals with the same strain/type?

Unfortunately we aren't doing much in the way of genomic testing, that's why despite omicron being basically everywhere we only have started finding them in the last few days. Knowing the functionality of other coronaviruses it's likely that other species of mammals can contract colds, but we all tend to have innate mammalian immune responses acting in kind so that it doesn't go into a full-blown covid disease.

That's why I pointed out to the dittohead above that runny noses aren't a typical reaction to novel coronavirus; our bodies do not regard it on the same level as other cold-like coronavirus species, therefore it does not know to express mucous to cut down on transmission and disease progression down the respiratory tract. Given the transmissibility of SARS-2 it leads me to believe that cold-coronavirus species would transmit at similar speed did we not have runny noses to coat the viral particles.

Consider, how much of the homo sapien species was wiped out when the cold was at first a novel virus?
