Japan has been terribly isolationist and racist for a LONG time. While the younger generations may not have issues with it as the world becomes more connected, much like the US, the older backwards generations are still in charge.

It takes time to cleanse a society of racism, and like our country proved, it's easy to return when people decide not to care or stay vigilant anymore.

They specifically mentioned they had been giving her milk, and she lost a lot of weight and a short amount of time.

A food intolerance to milk would have that effect on someone.

she could've gone home, but had received written death threats from her 'partner', that if she left the country and thereby him, he would track her down and kill her.  according to her sisters this is the direct reason she changed her mind about simply agreeing to leave when Japan told her to.  i can't be the only one who feels like he is a contributing factor in what is a negligent homicide at the least, and murder by torture if we want to be realistic.  and are death threats not illegal in Japan?  idk, ianaJl.  total horror story, but it looks like people are trying to make something positive come of it.

2021-12-05 1:22:21 PM
Well, that was depressing. And I'm thinking the US is not much better and more likely worse in this type of thing.

What is with Americans and any weeb wanting to  move to Japan? It's the equivalent of Paris Syndrome. Disillusionment is strong after a couple years and they ultimately hate the country when they leave. Know two people who were in the military and they were disgusted about how animals were treated. Another person worked for a multinational corporation that got a transfer to Tokyo...hated it. Another is reduced to walking around to find a Kissa open while translating text.

I spent time there as well in the military. One of the only places I've been where I never found local friends.

Was friends with a shipmate who married a Japanese gal so I guess anything is possible though.

It seems she was in Japan on a student visa; studying Japanese.

There is a reason the first thing they say in the orientation session for new students at a Japanese language school is "Do not overstay your visa".

It does sound like she listened to the second thing they say, which is "If you do happen to overstay your visa, voluntarily report yourself to the regional immigration bureau immediately. You will simply be deported, without fuss."

The third thing is "If you are caught by an immigration officer, you will be heavily fined, and then deported".

The fourth thing was basically "God help you if you are caught by police"

The only thing I can imagine she could have done was move to another country to teach English. I have a few friends who rotated between different East Asian countries to teach English. And even this would depend on if the new job would pay for her expenses to move. Otherwise, she may not have been able to afford it.

FunkBrothers: What is with Americans and any weeb wanting to  move to Japan? It's the equivalent of Paris Syndrome. I loved the few times I visited Japan. I enjoyed it because I generally stick to myself while traveling and Japan makes it easy to do that and still experience the culture of the country. Not a weeb though and have no aspirations to live there especially seeing how foreigners are often treated as separate by the society or associate primarily with other foreigners even when they speak Japanese fluently (or have been there for decades). It's a hard country for Japanese people to survive/thrive in, so I expect it would be even harder for foreigners. I have friends that live there and teach English and this has been their experience as well.

Not quite a fair comparison.

We have far more in our immigration system because:

1. It is much easier to live here as a non-english speaker without immigration status than it would be for a non-japanese speaker to live in Japan.

2. It is much easier to enter illegally. We aren't an island, and we offer far more visas.

3. It's much easier to learn English than Japanese.

Given Japan's high xenophobia around foreigners and how they are far less multicultural, it would be a fool's game to deliberately try to live there as an undocumented immigrant.

The US, whatever else you want to complain about, is obviously a relatively attractive destination for doing so. We cannot simultaneously be painted as the worst and be such a popular destination full of people loving here for decades and still encouraging family to join them.

bisi: So what's their advice for when your psycho boyfriend threatens to hunt and kill you if you leave the country?

Presumably report the psycho while you're at the voluntary reporting center at the immigration bureau.
Doesn't actually apply in this instance, as the psycho partner only threatened that after she had talked to the police and was presumably in custody.

So many portions of her story meant she was going to have a bad time:

1) Non-Japanese Asian (pretty low on the what racist Japanese people rate foreigners scale)
2) Violated her student visa by not attending classes, and getting expelled.
3) Violated her student visa in a different manner, by working in a factory
4) Overstayed her visa
5) Tried to claim asylum in order to keep staying
6) Initially cooperative, then changed midway. Story states she received threatening letters from her partner - were those not given to the authorities?

Technically, the headline really should be "Overstaying your visa, after repeatedly violating it, in Japan can be fatal".

That's like 95% of foreign people here. When I first came for a brief study abroad stint, I was shocked. We're in Kyoto. There's a billion historical sites, hundreds of incredible restaurants and cafes, world class shopping, cool bars, there's thin and beautiful people everywhere, and almost all of my classmates just wanted to hang out in the dorms to play video games and watch anime.
