Huh. I either didn't know or forgot he died.

He was running down a dream, didn't complete it and now he did.

Well deserved. I appreciate his music so much more after he is gone.

He died I. That stretch of late 2015, 2016, and 2017 where we lost lemmy, bowie, prince, Chester Bennington, Chris cornell, Scott Weiland, and others died.

"Tom Petty receives posthumous Ph.D. for music from UF"?

Tom Petty's dead, so he didn't receive anything.

More like "UF receives free publicity for empty gesture."

UF doesn't do anything that doesn't somehow benefit UF the most.

Me and Tom Petty went to the same high school, albeit ~25 years apart. Cool story. And my dad saw him and the band perform at local bars in the earlier days when they were called Mudcrutch.

Dr. Petty made a lot of enjoyable music. I am sad he died.

Really? The world sort of started going sideways shortly after Petty's death. He was somehow the glue that bound the earth to reality.

There might be something to that. Marc Maron had a joke in one of his specials not long ago about trying to find common ground and having a civil conversation with an alt-righter.

Maron: "Hey, do you like Petty?"

Alt-righter: "I love Petty! I don't like Jews, though...."

He never came round here after he made it big.  I think twice since the late 80s.  He didn't even come back for his moms funeral.

Saw him once at a festival in, I think, 2015. Great show, he was clearly stoned to the gills for fhe encore though.. I didn't go see any of his run at the Hollywood Bowl, which were his last shows, and I deeply regret it now.

I REALLY wish I had seen Prince. From all reports, the dude put on an outstanding show.

Saw him at the Cow Palace in South San Fran in '84 or '85 for his Purple Rain tour. Awesome! Sheila E. opened, then drummed for him. What a showman! He actually laid down and 'made love' to the stage floor and made it look classy! Cried when he died. (My mom was dying too at the time. too much for me.) I've instructed my neice that if she ever has to put me in a home and I don't react at all to '1999', she no longer has to feel bad about visiting me anymore, I've 'left the building'!

So, I tell them I'm a pro rocker, and who do you think they give me? The Dean of the University of Florida, himself. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Dean - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Dean says? "Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga lagunga." So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Dean, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive an honorary PhD in music." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

Feels weird to say someone has been cut down in their prime at age 66, but I can't shake the feeling that he had a lot of music left to give. I'll cherish what we got.

Tom Petty was a brilliant songwriter- it's hard to realize just how many great songs he wrote. Trying to learn every song from Wildflowers on guitar right now, just because i love his music so much.

Ha, the Petty show I saw was at Outside Lands in Golden Gate Park, so you might have seen that show.

My condolences on your mom's passing; based on the timeline I imagine it has been a few years, which is a mere blip in grief's schedule when it comes to the loss of a loved one.

You can absolutely do no wrong by learning the Petty catalog. Some people would call it simple, which is misleading--if it was that simple, everyone would be doing it as well as he did.

I was lucky enough to catch him on a whim with my ex-wife and some friends from Colorado. We saw him at (what was then) sandstone arena, and Jackson Browne opened up for him. Petty rocked it.

Petty died in April. My brother had died in January, (3 days before Bowie) and Mom died in November. 2016 just really sucked from the start. Thank you for your sympathy.

1) mid 90s, trading "ever met anyone famous?" stories in the Navy....one guy said he was a handyman in FL, got a job in a beach house.  Went over, the Mrs. showed him the roof, he's topside, for 2-3 hours.  Voice calls out:  "hey man!  We're gonna have lunch!  Come on down, take a break!"

Navy pal comes down off the ladder.  "Uhhh....Hi, Tom Petty!"

"Yeah man, come on down, hang out."

Pal has lunch and smoke with Tom Petty.  Fixes the AC or whatever. "Thanks, Mr. Petty!"

2) I had just joined Twitter when Petty's band's guitars got stolen, around 2013 or so. His twitter posted something like, "all our shiat got stolen, we want it back, no questions asked".  I replied, "what kind of lowlife steals another man's guitars? I play too and that is bullshiat!"

the official Tom Petty account replied, "yeah man, it sucks.  Keep on rocking!"

/the guitars were recovered

As a groundskeeper? Don't know if he had a family then but a lot of colleges let your kids go for free if you work there. I know some parents of my friends that wanted to get a job as janitor as a college for that purpose.
