They are sentient, absolutely; it's sapience that is up for debate.  The two are commonly confused.

Sentience = conscious and alive; able to perceive and/or feel.  Sapience = self-awareness and intelligence in a human sense.

Conveniently leaves out animals used for food. Interesting. What's the difference? Other than that's the group we eat?

/not vegan, just not seeing how this is logically or intellectually consistent.

One of my pet peeves is online article that can't tell the difference between senecent and asenescent. There was a period where articles about turtle and microbes were calling them senescent and I was so peeved I imagine my peevewaves rippled through time and space and made several of the writers' heads explode. Like, there is a clique of content creators somewhere who never heard of a negation or even a prefix for fark's sake.
