Horseshiat. Back when the pandemic started Johns Hopkins offered a free certification for contact-tracing. I went through the 10 hours of class, got the certification, and then sat with my thumb up my ass for the next year. I couldn't even find a place to volunteer for free.

Contact tracing is never going to work in America, because Freedumbs.

Yeah, that's a lost cause. We can't get people to give enough of a shiat to get a vaccine to protect themselves. I imagine contact tracers are just going to get hang-ups and door slams.

Why was it ever off? It's an essential element of battling an epidemic. As quick as you can, identify all people recently exposed and have them take extra precautions. That's how you limit spread.

I don't think it's that they don't even care enough to protect themselves, it's more like, they only care about themselves.  You see, in their minds, when bad things happen to other people (outgroup), it's because they deserved it, so no need to feel empathy for them.  In the rare event something bad happens to a good person, (ingroup) only then can they provide charity via a GoFundMe.  All those other people who died of COVID? They deserved it because they were old/unhealthy/foreign/sinners.  They think to themselves that they'll never get COVID because in their own minds they are obviously good, healthy people, and if they do they'll survive because why would God punish them by being the 1.5% fatality from a disease that has a 98.5% survival rate???

The whole idea of a vaccine helping to protect the spread of the disease to others who might die doesn't factor into it at all for them.  If masks were still in short supply and protected the wearer 100% but not anyone else (so, basically the reverse of how it ended up being), we'd see these same people hoarding them by caseload like toilet paper and up in arms about free masks being given to the poor.

As someone that has conducted all kinds of contact tracing, I'm getting a real kick, etc....

It was used before COVID-19; it'll be used after COVID-19 pandemic is gone - it's a core public health tool. That being said, I absolutely agree that more people know about it now and quite a few seem to think it's a violation of their rights ("How did you get this number? I have HIPPO protection!") to call and ask questions.

I'm not surprised you weren't called. At some point contact tracing becomes useless - there is just no way to have enough people tracing because the web of connections is overwhelming. Why people are reading about it now is they're trying to get information about spread.

Buy the best mask you can afford (N95, KN95, KF94, etc...), avoid crowded indoor environments and promote ventilation. Vaccinations are critical, but they're not going to stop what's happening right now, in the short term. Vaccinations work weeks from now; masks and ventilation work immediately.

Yeah I signed up for that too. I mean "There are gonna be a zillion contact tracer jobs" is what I was hearing on the news. I even applies at some places that were supposedly doing it here and offered their own training. Never heard back from any of them and gave up and didn't even finish the Johns Hopkins training.

I'm guessing it was just another scam. Start a contract tracing company, get a big government contract, hire a few people and then claim no one will talk to you so you stop hiring. Keep the money and PROFIT!

Instead of trying to be tracers, we should have opened a tracing company. Probably could have made a lot of money.

Do you have that app in circulation, that automatically advises you if anyone near you contracted Covid?

We use it in Denmark, and it works well because it relies on GPS. So, if someone with that app installed gets Covid, the app will alert anyone who they were near, because, well, GPS.

Of course anti-vaxxers don't install it. Even though anti-vaxxers mostly believe in Covid, they still do anything they can do fark up everything for everything else. Not installing that app, refusing to wear a mask, is a very active attempt to fark everyone else over, so is not getting an vaccination. But refusing to get an vaccination can be explained by being ignorant, or mislead, but not installing the app tends to go along with it, showing that its actually malice.

Yeah, but because this is America and Donald Trump is a farkwit, we never got a nationwide app. You need to download different apps for each state. That's fine if you live in the center of one state. If you live in DC, like me, you have to download one for DC, one for Maryland, and one for Virginia because reasons. Not good reasons, mind you, just reasons.

I'll see what I can do to point out how stupid that comment was.

1) I guess he's just fine with sacrificing people over 80?
2) Death isn't the only thing to be concerned about with COVID. For every person that dies, there are 20 or more who have to live with organ damage, and some have permanent scarring in their lungs and heart.
3) Let's use less rectally-sourced info. Here are the current mortality rates by age group (note that the Omicron variant seems to be putting a lot more children into the hospital than previous variants that the data below is based on):

0-17: 1 death per 10,000 cases in this age group (99.99% survive)
18-29: 1 in 1850 dies (99.94%)
30-39: 1 in 483 dies (99.8%)
40-49: 1 in 173 dies (99.4%)
50-64: 1 in 53 dies (98.1%)
65-74: 1 in 16 dies (93.7%)
75-84: 1 in 7 dies (85.9%)
85+: 1 in 3.7 dies (73%)

It does work.  My state offers a free cell phone app that's being used by 62% of the population.  I've been notified 4 times when I came in contact with someone who tested positive within 14 days after contact.   Even if its only 62%, that's a majority of the population who can self-quarantine, knows to immediately seek care at the first sign of symptoms. We can also self-report if we do get sick of every place/person we have contacted so even if you're not using the app, the health department knows where to go.

Should have clarified - open a window. Even cracking it open to introduce fresh air and dilute indoor air concentrations is better than nothing. I am not suggesting HVAC re-engineering on a large scale, but offering suggestions for family gatherings and possibly classrooms and offices.

In fairness, the Danish app doesn't interact with the Swedish or German one either.

Since there's a bridge to Sweden, a lot of Danes live there, and work in Copenhagen.

Germany doesn't have tax on food, which is 25% in Denmark. So everyone within 30 minutes of the border visits Germany weekly.
