None of those are opiates. Opioids are highly addictive. Fentanyl is like, the highest level of opioid.

Do the pills interact with the foil? Are the burned and inhaled? Is that some black gunk they put to stabilize the pills?

On its face, fentanyl sucks as a recreational drug. Not because it's not "good" but because the duration of action is so short. This is great for dealers and repeat business I guess, but for the user the high is over much too fast.

/The short duration is one of its medical selling points.

Yea, time to start slapping dentists.  Most people get their first hit of opiates as children getting their wisdom teeth pulled.

It is the perfect storm:
The oral surgeons make their money by churning and burning, so it is in their best interest to over prescribe opiates so the patient doesn't come back complaining about pain.
Kids just take the pills even if they don't need them because the doctor and their mom said so.
Developing brains get hooked.

~ hour IV, ~ 2 hours IM.  What is great about it is how quickly it is metabolized even after medium to long term use.  It was our preferred DoC from neonates to the elderly.

This doesn't speak to the patches and other delayed dose designs.

Falling into that stuff is far too easy.

Example: I got a vasectomy two weeks ago and was prescribed 12 oxys for pain relief. Standard operating procedure. I didn't ask for *any* pain pills.

Four years ago a family member did the same thing and got hooked after his vasectomy had complications and he had a lot of pain.

He died in August from an OD from street pills (laced with fentanyl).

His last post on FB, several hours before he died, was of a recovery center that looked really promising.

100,000 people have died in the US with a similar story. Each with a name, a face, and a lot of friends and family devastated.

Words cannot describe the hate I have for those manufacturing and trafficking fentanyl.

That is always weird to me. I understand how, but I can't experience it myself. I've had lots of pain issues during my life (spine, crohns, etc) and opioids make me feel like I have the flu. A prescription for 20 hydrocodone lasted me ~6 months and I only took them if I was in so much pain I couldn't get out of bed. Funny enough my Dr. tried Fentanyl and it did almost nothing. No high, no sick feeling, and almost no pain relief.

That said, IV administered benadryl I absolutely love. I feel comfortably tired, then the clock suddenly moves several hours ahead. "Benadryl, because you can't feel anything if you are unconscious."

Just wondering.  How many of you first learned about fentanyl from someone you knew overdosing?  Family member?  It's the pcp of the 20's.  Too many folk think they know how to control dosing.  Just gotta tell ya I have been close to a lot of hard addicts over the last 7 years ... they accept a hard alcoholic like me.  The deaths and losses I have seen will haunt me, but I think there are many affected folks out there from these addictions not just from using.  It's an epidemic worse even right now than Covid as it is exasperated by desperate people afraid of the virus and trying to look after their own rather than caring for the less fortunate who are disproportionally affected.  Breaks my heart.

2021-12-04 1:55:46 AM
This is a very big problem. It not only kills a lot of addicts, but those who actually need the legal drugs. I remember our dream of traveling all over the country to see all of it's beauty. It was crushed when I became disabled. I broke two discs in my neck and one in my lower back due to Degenerative Bone Disease. The pain can get very bad. When it started, my doctor, like many others gave me the pills freely. "Oh you're going away, here, I'll double the amount, so you don't have to worry about running out". We could go away for two months and I had enough. It started to get gradually harder till it became three pills a day for one month. I have to see my doctor every month to get my scrip renewed. When I have a good day I can get by with two or even one, but my neck has been getting worse and I am starting to have more bad days. The doctor can't give me more pills. I use Lidocaine ointment to help. We have only traveled once for more then a month in the last ten years. I had to go to a clinic and jump through a hundred hoops to get just enough pills to make it home.

I actually have been prescribed Ativan for when my insomnia lasts more than two days of zero sleep.

I somehow manage to take one, sleep, and not take more.

It doesn't get me high. I don't feel drunk. It just what it's prescribed to do, as I take it as directed.

Do all these people just say, "fark what the pharmacy says, I'll take 5 of these suckers!"?

Side note, I have had horribly injured people refuse the pain medicine we carry (fentanyl, ketamine) because of the stigma both drugs have thanks to the opioid epidemic and the DARE/war on drugs programs from the 90s.

They literally think one dose is going to get them addicted.

And it's horrifying.

Oxycontin =/= Fentanyl.

One dose is not going to get someone who has a traumatic femur fracture that is spasming and not fixated addicted. And I have literally had these patients refuse pain medicine because they're so terrified it is.

You realize most opiate addicts in America became addicted in this very way? Oxycontin is highly addictive - it's formulated to be this way in the way it interacts with the blood-brain barrier differently than other oral opioid formulations that are commonly prescribed. It also produces Euphoric and anti-depressant effects which enhance it's addictive nature.

The Sacklers have been shown to know exactly what they were doing when they made this drug. They knew it was far more addictive than classical opiates other than heroin derivatives. And they gleefully did so, knowing it would make them a fark ton of money.

For this cliché to have its maximum effect, I'd recommend that you add the bit about those prisons being private.   If you write "keep the private prisons filled" it makes your prose seem much more cutting edge and social-justicey.
