Trying again to get these changes made with a cruise line, which means sitting on hold. I kinda wanna meet the woman who does the majority of the VO work for Carnival, just to see how she felt about reading all of this stuff. While I wait, I think I'll wander over to Pol Tab. What could go wrong?

Just ppd the trip I was going to take in January.

A bit paranoid over the new strain of COVID.

Was gonna take Amtrak from NYC all the way to San Fran.

I will see what happens and reschedule it later next year.

For employees, yes. For riders?  it's a bit confusing.

They do require vaccines for riders in the state you going through and only in the dining car.
So in NY, yes, but in Ohio, no.

4) look off shore. The US is sneaking nuclear submarines out to the pacific ocean.

I'd pass.  Even though I have my booster, I'm 51 and have some health issues that put me at higher risk.

Would you have a private berth on the train?  Maybe if I had that I would do it.

I just did a BBC interview. The host said that in the U.K. you can just walk into a pharmacy and pick up free tests.

I informed him that at-home tests in the US cost $8-$10 each-if you can find them-and I'm not sure but I think maybe his head exploded.

Yeah.
In my rural area, all the pharmacies have signs posted saying home tests are limited to 1 per purchase.
and that is if they have them.

We rode Amtrak in September and Mrs. Ride handled the tickets and reservations, but I don't think we had to do anything more than maybe complete a short questionnaire when we checked in. Face masks were required everywhere on the train except in your own compartment if you had the door/curtain closed.

I was kind of surprised at how often the train blew its whistle while rolling along but it happened at every intersection etc. Probably makes for some noisy times for houses near the tracks.

Very loud.
The problem is here in the Midwest, Amtrak has to use the freight lines, They don't have their own tracks.
And unless the laws have changed in the past couple years, the freight companies only have to pay for minimal equipment at crossings as required by law. The towns are required to do any upgrades they want. Most towns don't due to the cost.

Well, if nothing else, that kid's parents make me feel a lot better about my parenting.  The advice I gave Kid on the eve of his departure for college ("Don't stick your dick in crazy, and always wrap it up") might have been mortifying for him (especially in the setting in which it was delivered, which was a P.F. Chang's during the lunch rush) but it was a far sight better than "LOL Don't get caught!" for shooting the place up.

I do know Iowa State was doing a study on horns and crossing alarms that would focus the sound directionally down the track.
That would help living near the tracks.
That was a few years ago, not sure if that study is finished or what the final findings are.

Yep. At least twice we had longish delays due to having to wait for a freight train to roll on through first. And I definitely remember thinking about the folks trying to sleep in the little towns we passed as the train blew its horn.

My first Amtrak ride - from Cleveland, Ohio to upstate New York - a guy in a large car drove right into the luggage car.  I looked out the window at the exact right moment and watched this.  His car crumpled and he died instantly.  I braced because I figured it would derail the train.  Nope - the train didn't even sway with the impact.  The guy was fleeing the police after robbing a gas station.

Unfortunately, the impact did manage to start a battery pack on fire.  We stopped in a field in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the early morning, to deal with it.  The closest spare battery pack was in Texas and had to be flown to us.  We arrived 12 hours late on a 11-hour train ride.  They kept the beer flowing and I had a great time making new friends.  I've taken Amtrak many times since then.

I have been slammed with homework and wrapping up with finals this week. I encountered a major roadblock last night so the husband suggested we go for a beach walk instead to help me clear my mind. What a magical night! The stars were out, there was no wind, and the tides were really low which gave me an opportunity to see a lot of nighttime sea creatures I would usually never be able to see.

I touched ALL of them. I booped crabs, nudibranchs, and various fish. I grabbed an eel, and pet loads of sea stars and sea cucumbers. Indy got to meet a sea cucumber. 10/10, much better than doing homework.
Now for some "meh" cell phone pictures.

Any halfway competent criminal defense attorney will be in regular contact with law enforcement and/or the district attorney letting them know the status, or there lack of, of their client that is wanted by authorities.

I forget which coach it was. I want to say it was Tom Izzo from Michigan State, but more likely it was a coach from a WAC conference rival (back when Univ. of HI was in the WAC). Anyway, band always set up next to the student section right near the visiting bench and the tunnel to their locker room. The tuba/Sousaphone players used to stand in the tunnel until a coach complained about them being too loud. And ever since they've had to sit up in the stands with the rest of the band.
